I really wanted to like this film but found myself becoming aggravated by the lead actress's appearance, attitude and meanness towards her boyfriend. I was expecting a comedy and this was definitely not that. In a nutshell? I hated it.
The first thing I noticed was the sound. It doesn't sound like a feature film - or even a TV drama. Luke, an aspiring journalist who takes himself way too seriously, is an unlikeable sod who believes a rumour that a Canadian Forces sharpshooter is chopping off fingers of dead Taliban fighters - a war crime. The story lacks ambition and imagination; the writing is comical leaving me thinking I was watching a mockumentary. Don't waste your time on this one. It's really quite bad.
I'm a sucker for stylish movies with great soundtracks and Atomic Blonde's soundtrack is especially good. Charlize Theron is amazing and edgy as Lorraine Broughton, a killer elite spy with MI6. Without giving anything away, the ending is a nice surprise. This film is similar in style and feel to Pulp Fiction, Reservoir Dogs and Kill Bill. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will watch it again.
