The Phenomenon (2022)
Lacks any substance
Really looked forward to seeing this but I was left very disappointed. It only covers the 98-02 World Cup period and skirts around the injury prior to the final, doesn't address any of the rumours (was he on pain killing injections etc) there was nothing in the 90 minutes that makes it worth watching to gain any insights into the man. The absolute highlight of it all was Christian Vieri and I must admit I'd love to see a fly on the wall with him after watching this, he's hilarious and honest. Even for the hardcore fans this doesn't really offer anything new. 3/10 just for the goal clips and that's being generous, better footage on YouTube.
The Alpinist (2021)
Stunning
This has to be up there with Free Solo, Meru, Dawn Wall as one of the most inspiring and beautifully shot films about climbing yet. Whilst it doesn't capture some of most epic achievements he did, the footage that is captured is breathtaking, the story and the human aspect are fascinating. I'll be recommending this to everyone I know for the foreseeable future, can't see how anyone would think they'd wasted 90 minutes watching this, give it a go and just enjoy.
Run Hide Fight (2020)
Something suspect about all the high praise, average and that's being generous.
Very very average film, acting is fine, it's reasonably well shot but the overall story has been done many times before and better. There's some leaps of logic required to allow it to be believable as well, not an awful film but certainly not one I'd recommend to anyone as it just doesn't do anything I've not seen done better elsewhere.
Not a film I'd watch twice and almost wish I'd turned it off halfway through as I'm never getting the time back and it didn't get any better at all ..can't say at any point I was on the edge of my seat, more shaking my head and muttering "really?"
Killing Gunther (2017)
Full of laughs, deserves more than 4.8 for sure
You're not going to find Bourne or Bond in this film but you will find a funny spoof documentary, Arnie shows some good comedy chops for sure in this, the whole film is daft and I have to say it's an underrated comedy, you could a lot worse to pass a few hours....
And Arnie sure can sing country :-)
Bando (2020)
Not as bad as some are making out
Personally I wasn't blown away by Train to Busan, it was ok and entertaining but certainly not the classic it was built up to be, this one for me was just as enjoyable as Busan, plenty of action, fast moving scenes and the CGI certainly wasn't as bad as some said - although I did watch this on my laptop so maybe it looks worse on a big TV.
I am a sucker for a zombie film and this one did it's job for sure, not going to be itching to watch it again but worth a chance for those on the fence I'd say.
Kill Ben Lyk (2018)
Not bad not great
The run time makes this more bearable, it's nothing ground breaking but does have a few moments that make you laugh, although it also has a few that make you groan. The acting at times is decent and at times woeful. The whole film is the kind of film that almost...almost is a good film but just doesn't quite get over the line as one I'd recommend immediately but if you need to kill 80 mins you could do worse..
Not a film I'd watch twice but don't feel the universe owes me time back for the first viewing so there's that at least...
All in all, average movie let down at times by dodgy acting and a dodgy plot, but it's also slightly daft and amusing...marmite film maybe?
Avanpost (2019)
Like a push up bra, looks great but nothing inside
Stunning visually in fairness, no complaints on that front but the dubbing is woeful, you'd swear whoever was doing it did it blind without seeing the context of what they were saying, at times they sound almost bored even when in the middle of a firefight etc...
The storyline is a bit of mess and opens up plot holes / requires leaps of faith that are stretching believability to breaking point.
It's about 30-45 mins too long, characters don't develop and the editing isn't great either...but the SFX are top notch which is a shame that they missed getting so much more of the film right.
The ending is laughable in fairness as well...
Usually hate the idea of Hollywood doing a remake of a foreign film but this feels like one that has scope for lots of improvements and could be a great film done right...
Hijacked (2012)
Don't bother, seriously..
This film has been done a 100 times before, sadly I can't think of a worse version of the old plane hijack story than this, massive plot holes, a story that lacks any real drama and acting that is straight out of the wood shop.
Being an MMA fan and having met Randy, I was interested to see how he did in a full feature as a main cast member and although he isn't the worst MMA crossover actor I have seen, sadly he brings nothing to the role than a million other actors couldn't have done also.
Purcell - brilliant in Prison Break, picking up a cheque here, he goes through the motions and as another review said, he barely says anything throughout.
The script leaves a lot to be desired so much as one moment they are at the front of the plane, next moment at the back - yet never bumping into the bad guys who are looking for them and I am pretty sure they don't have a Hogwarts invisibility cloak....
They find the hijackers parachutes and....leave them there, dudes at least cut a cord or three!!! All in all, left me thinking who on earth wrote this and why didn't anyone pick up on all the glaring errors, but then the cheesy way the film is shot - the director it seems has tried to emulate many moody scenes, panning shots etc but all come off as cheap and crass.
Save your time, go watch some adverts instead! Sorry Randy, loved ya as an MMA legend, but...this is worse than coming back from retirement!
Mum & Dad (2008)
Very poor
I was really looking forward to seeing this after reading some of the reviews on here, finally watched it last night and all I can say is that I nearly turned it off several times and at the end I wished I had as I could have been watching something decent instead! The acting in all fairness is between good and excellent at times, its just the story is very weak - no justification for anything that happens - I have read on here its based on Fred and Rose west but there is nothing really to indicate that in any great depth other than its based around a pair of psychotic parents.
I enjoyed Saw and the rest of the films in that series although not as good are all better than this, Hostel is probably one of the worst films I have sat through - I am not squeamish and love a great horror film but I do like to actually have some semblance of a plot to go with the gore - this is more gore for gore's sake in the vein of Hostel than something clever (yeah yeah Saw ain't gonna win an Oscar but at least it had a plot and some twists)with gore added into the mix, this is closer to Hostel than Saw by a mile, when it ended I really did think I wonder what all the fuss was about - OK its shot on a cheap budget which does show at times, the special effects are very good in fairness, its just the whole thing was written on the back of a fag packet.......
1/10 because I am sick of being disappointed by films that really are a waste of time. Great acting. Awful film.
Shoot 'Em Up (2007)
There goes another hour thirty I won't get back :(
If you want to watch a comedy go and watch an actual comedy - this is more tongue in cheek than out and out comedy, the action scenes are poor in comparison to say the Bourne films or Die Hard 4.0, the over the top nature of the film doesn't work as well as say Crank, the comedy doesn't work as well as say 95% of comedy films, its just a mash up of nonsense aimed at teenagers who think just because its got a lot of shooting that it must be a great action film..
I was really looking forward to watching this, heard some good things about it (sadly mostly on here) but at the end I just wished I had watched Crank again as thats the film its closest to, and Crank is superior in every way (and that ain't gonna win no Oscars anytime soon - and not because of the writers strike either!)
Just an odd film that felt like I was watching someone play an arcade game on my TV, shame it wasn't a decent arcade game tho......
