  • Played the game - I liked it

6.5 from me. I played the game and liked the movie. I genuinely don't get the criticism from those who played the game and expected - what? A scene-for-scene adaptation? The twist in the story was actually a pleasant surprise and kept me entertained. Plus, the ending features a solid nod to the game, which I appreciated.

It's a fun, fast-paced popcorn horror flick - not something meant to be deep or overly profound. I'd honestly love to see more like this again, it reminded me a bit of Happy Death Day 2 U. Not every horror film needs to be The Substance, let alone Hereditary - which, for me, goes far beyond what I'd watch purely for entertainment.

The cast was solid (with one exception), though I would've liked more screen time for Peter Stormare. With a slightly stronger, more adult lineup matching his caliber and giving the concept a bit more room to breathe, this easily could've earned another star. The gore was on point, and the pacing didn't drag.

Give it a shot - just don't go in expecting an Until Dawn clone.

  • Excellent

Jake Gyllenhal's and Ruth Negga's performance are absolutely top notch, and worth watching for their acting alone - the cherry on the top is great storytelling, an intriguing plot that keeps you thinking "who did it". Everyone else is well cast too, with a brilliant Peter Sarsgaard as Tommy Molto and Bill Camp.

I think it's clever that the ending was slightly changed to the book - since a movie had already been done covering it with Harrison Ford, and the way they presented the conclusion made sense and was genuinely surprising.

I would definitely recommend giving it a go if you like crimes / thrillers and don't have a Gen Z attention span (the pacing was definitely not an issue, nor was it dragged out).

  • Agreed, pretty good.

Does it re-invent the horror genre? No.

Does it take heavy inspo from final destination? Yes.

Does it have decent jump scares and good moments? Yes.

Does it have likeable characters? Also yes.

It is entertaining, and good for a popcorn flick? Definitely.

I almost didn't watch it because of the low rating, but I realised that some of my favourite horror movies (and I'm not talking psycho horror like hereditary, which I'm not a fan of) and scifi movies are rated really low on IMDB for some reason. I gave it a shot and was pleasantly surprised.

If you liked happy death day, with a bit of a comedic twist, and final destination as well as ready or not...I reckon you'll like this one! For me it's a 7 in this genre.
