What do writers do when they suck at their job? They pull an old story and change the name of the characters. That is all that happened here. As others point out, this is just House with another name and none of the charm. The Holmesian references are in name only. Next week they are remaking Shaka Zulu with Tom Sandoval as the lead and the characters are named after folks from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Charlie Bucket leads a group of Zulu warriors as they battle the colonizing British to keep the profits flowing to them in the slave trade. Only Sir Ian McKellan can save them as a much older Xulu shaman that can conjure water from stones...
I stopped watching the show a number of years ago because most of the characters are annoying idiots. You have Sue who can barely keep a runway clear and still destroying equipment, Agnes and chip who are just gaming the native culture and brains have frozen, and a few new moronic faces that sober up long enough to get their drug addled family involved. The only one I really dug was Glenn and he apparently had enough sense to leave the show. Other than there being cold temperatures we are let to watch people ride around on snowmobiles (snow machines remove snow) using pc parlance to kill a bunch of rodents unless you are native in which case you blather on for 30 mins about how sacred the animal is before you drown a mom and calf moose smdh. Morons. The saddest part is they are subsidized out the yin yang by the oil companies and our taxes and have all of the things you or I can, just most folks are in some sort of addiction phase. Had the same shack for 50 years and can't be bothered to do more than cover holes with plywood lol. I really didn't believe it until my cousin was stationed there and got to see. Anyway, it is mostly people shoveling snow, soap boxing some mantra about harvesting and food security in between killings of 3 pound (non dressed) animals, and riding snow machines places. The views spectacular, the people frozen to the point they can barely think. And lots of set up scenarios with fresh footprints and snowmobile tracks lol. Best to just go and visit and see for yourself.
Well it should be obvious to anyone watching these newer Rice series, that the property owners really don't care. The books are so much better and the lead actress just is not convincing. No spoilers but the things I found different in the series compared to the books are that it is really hard to follow the genealogy in the series, the vision scenes don't make sense, and they like to pull things back in so we don't forget. Rowan is supposed to be a bright neurosurgeon, but this only gets referenced lightly and instead we are given an actress that seems to only understand emoting confusion. It just makes the series drag although it does leave room for others to fill. There are also a couple of important characters omitted and added to help push the story narrative they keep hinting at. Anyway it has all the usual notes of women are super powerful and motherhood (omg this latest ep in s2 was just awful lol) family are cray cray and things don't have to make sense to be a full story. I don't expect tv series to be like the books exactly and while I appreciate the nice sets and costumes, choosing weak leads seems to be a habit with these. Who knows maybe it is just bad AI script interpretation but something is missing and people seem to be off their game in the writing dept. I say this harshly because when you already have source material and do not have to generate anything, it takes a special talent to somehow mess that up. I am going to finish the series but really hope there is an "aha" moment that clues me in to what they were thinking with this.
