  • Put Bossa Nova, politics, and romanticism in to a blender and you get...

I just saw this film yesterday as part of Brazilian Film Festival, and have to say that I was a little disappointed. Of course I was not expecting Walter Salles Material, but even if it was a low budget film, some things could have been done with more care and would have made for a better movie.

First of all, there are scenic elements that should denote the 60's that don't, such as the fashion style of the characters, their haircuts, etc: it took me a while to figure out that the story had flashed back to the 60's. When the camera pans through NYC and we can see a modern day logo of MET LIFE on one of the buildings, it's rather disappointing.

They could have also had some of the "foreign" roles played by people who spoke the foreign language better, such as the American producer, or the Argentinian hotel receptionist. Both of them had notorious accents...

The film's rhythm was rather slow, and I guess we were expecting a sort of climax in one regard, and it climaxed in another way which basically made the film even slower. The end was also disappointing and rather cheesy.

Walter Lima Jr. is not exactly an inexperienced director, and I was disappointed with this film.
