Hotaru no haka (1988)
My God, what can I say?
This may not be right of me, but I gave this astoundingly POWERFUL film 9/10 stars. It honestly deserves a perfect 10--But I held back because I was simply SO emotionally Devastated, overwhelmed, and utterly consumed by grief that I am unfairly giving it a 9. The film is possibly the most spiritually crushing war film Ever made--with the only conceivable exception being Elem Klimov's absolute masterpiece,"Come and See." However, a convincing argument can certainly be made that "Grave of the Fireflies" is on That same level. It's, at the very least, a very close 2nd place. Expect a heavy heart!
La commune (Paris, 1871) (2000)
ONCE, AGAIN: THANK GOD FOR LA COMMUNE 1871
AND ONCE, AGAIN: THANK GOD, THAT WE HAVE A TRUE ARTIST, LIKE PETER WATKINS, TO HAVE LIVED IN OUR LIFETIME, However, it's SUCH A TRAGEDY NOT ENOUGH PEOPLE KNOW WHO THIS DYNAMO OF DOCUMENTARY IS, NOR HOW HE SINGLEHANDEDLY MADE THE WORD: "Pseudo-DOCUMENTARY, NOT A DIRTY ONE-Decades before the great, Abbas Kiarostami made his great "Close-Up!"
The War Game (1966)
THANK GOD FOR "THE WAR GAME!"
AND THANK GOD FOR PETER WATKINS-THIS MAN IS AN INTERNATIONAL GEM OF A FILMMAKER-WHOSE WHOLE BODY OF WORK DESERVES TO BE SEEN ON A GLOBAL SCALE! HIS WORK SPANS CENTURIES IN TOPIC, AND STANDS AS DARING AS ANYTHING BEING RELEASED TODAY...EVERY FAN OF FILM, AND EVERY FAN OF HISTORY OWES IT TO HIMSELF OR HERSELF TO DISCOVER THE WORK OF PETER WATKINS-THEN, THE FILM FOUNDATION UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF MARTIN SCORSESE NEED TO SELECT THE FILMIC WORK OF PETER WATKINS TO BE NEWLY RESTORED...THIS WORLD DESERVES PETER WATKINS-RIGHT HERE, AND RIGHT NOW! Thank You

Johnny Dangerously (1984)
Overlooked and Misunderstood
How many Great lines: I don't know why, really, but people complain that it's stupid...so was Airplane...was it trying to be important when I wasn't looking?? Sure, it's "hit & miss," But the hilarious "hits" outweigh the "missed," in my opinion...

Arrested Development (2003)
ONE OF THE ALL TIME GREATS!
Chappelle's Show was one of the most side-splittingly funny shows I've Ever seen...I rank it alongside Monty Python's Flying Circus, Mr. Show w/Bob & David, the 70's lineup of SNL, and Arrested Development...ALL of which are insanely HILARIOUS..,.todd gold
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
IM SPEECHLESS
THIS FILM PICKED UP MY SPIRIT, WANDERED WITH IT AND ULTIMATELY BLEW ME THE HELL AWAY....I AM IN AWE OF "PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK...."
Coeur fidèle (1923)
IT'S SAD, REALLY....
Who, even among the proudest of film geeks, even knows the name, Jean Epstein, in today's world of comic book hero movie franchises and the indiscriminate remaking of films that were perfect to begin with, e.g. Psycho, The Ladykillers, etc., And even-in the case of Halloween-Correct me if I'm wrong, a Third remake, and yes, I'm gonna go there the FOURTH REMAKE OF A STAR IS BORN!-ENOUGH! I, admittedly, fairly recently, discovered the genius of Jean Epstein-after finally discovering silent Genius, Abel Gance-And Thanks to God or whatever, I discovered a whole World of artistic genius within the silent era, that I am truly grateful for stumbling into....Coeur Fidele is a brilliant work of uncompromising artistic integrity...Go on, give it a shot -you just may discover something about Artistic Expression you didn't even know exists. . . . -todd gold
Napoléon vu par Abel Gance (1927)
A TRIED AND TRUE MASTERPIECE
I don't care what anybody else says-There is only one word to describe this film Even today- PERFECT. -todd gold
Moonrise (1948)
Overlooked and Underrated Classic
I agree with critic Dennis Schwartz, when he says The power of this film lies is in Borzage's "visual mise en scene." I honestly can't understand how and why Moonrise rated a measly 7.1 rating here. The story is engrossing, and the imagery, itself, has a powerfully beautiful impact on me. Beautiful and Sadly underrated film-thankfully Criterion recognizes this and put out a Fantastic restored version on Blu-ray! I Highly recommend it to any new viewers and to the rest of you naysayers, I think Moonrise deserves another look.... -todd gold
Bloody Sunday (2002)
Breathtakingly conveyed
Obviously an important day in history, and the events of that day are breathtakingly conveyed by the best Docudrama filmmaker we have, Paul Greengrass, Before we Knew who he was-and that may have made a certain difference in my experience of the film-it was more exhilarating (and impressive) before Greengrass had made a name for himself at this kind of documentary-styled filmmaking. This one, when it came out, definitely gave me goosebumps....todd gold
