Basically the main thing this show has going for it are the cameos by all the famous actors and directors. But it's not actually funny.
It just feels like a ripoff of Episodes and Extras, except those shows made me laugh a ton and I haven't cracked a smile for any of these episodes. Curb Your Enthusiasm is another Hollywood one that is hilarious and far superior.
I used to think Seth Rogen was funny, but his character in this is just pathetic and unlikable, but not in the funny Larry David unlikable way.
This is highly overrated and if people haven't seen those other shows, I'd suggest checking them out instead.

I had higher expectations for this based on reviews. I like all the actors in it, especially Paul Mescal, but the movie didn't work for me. I just felt so unattached to any of the characters. And I'm someone who's a young widow, so grief is something that should get me...but this was just off.
It felt very slow and I'm glad I didn't watch in the theater as I had to be on my phone to even make it through. The tone, the lack of any real plot...and I love movies like Before Sunrise where they're literally just talking the whole time or dark surreal movies like Requiem for a Dream. This movie just didn't work in the way those did.

If you filter the review scores by country, it's basically the Americans who are trashing the film. I'm an American living in Norway (the home country of the director), and I found the film very disturbing, and incredibly relevant.
I teach about American government and politics and it's clear that despite the fact that there is supposed to be a separation of church and state, religion has had a massive influence on politics in the US for a long time. How does anyone think Roe gets overturned despite the majority of Americans being against that?
And this film shows how these Evangelical literal interpretations of the Bible lead to America's flawed Israel policy. It's incredibly scary to see how many people want war in the region and how close we are to this escalating.
I only wish we got to know how the one former preacher, Frank Schaeffer, came to leave the movement. It could serve as a path forward. How do you deprogram these people? The film doesn't really leave us with any hope or point to any solutions to the problem, which is my main problem with it.
