Alien: Romulus (2024)
High budget movie with weak cast
I am not sure what could have saved this movie for me, but I am particularly annoyed with the casting. The lead girl was no Sigourney Weaver, that's for sure. She would have matched better with Sesame Street or something on Nickelodeon perhaps.
The alien CGI and effects were decent enough, at least what you can expect from a $80 million movie, however the story also felt a bit like it was repeating something you have seen many times before.
And as usual, I don't feel compatible with the messaging Hollywood always likes to put out. What is the right decision when faced with a dilemma, for instance.
I often gauge how captivated by a movie by how long I take to get through it, and this didn't score well in that regard. I was pausing the movie to check socials and news frequently, and once I even forgot I was watching it. But I made it through, so it wasn't horrible.
Challengers (2024)
Movie takes itself way too seriously
None of the characters interested me, so I didn't care what happened in the movie. The tennis action just comes across as lame. The movie tried too hard to make it more than it was, with all sorts of fancy photography, which just seemed desperate and didn't really help anything. The themes kept on repeating, so at the end it was really boring. Zendaya isn't a particularly good actress in my honest opinion, and she was miscast in this role. I kept asking myself, why should I care about these guys? Then I asked myself, should I even bother to finish the movie? I did, but that was the next day, and I even regretted doing that. I will make sure to check out this director and try to avoid any of his/her movies in the future. Big waste of time.
3 Body Problem (2024)
Hokey
Benioff and Weiss once again shows they can take something that is interesting and totally ruin it. Hokey is the word. Then add your typical leftist politics du-jour, and an extreme amount of mind-numbingly stupid decisions that aren't presented in any depth other than to conclude that the very smart people that make them just short-circuit for no specific reason. Science is presented in the typical shallow Hollywood fashion to fool people of average intelligence into thinking they are watching an intelligent show. That it is not. So much is too on the nose. The pacing is very slow, which frustrated me when watching it. Too much seems fake and contrived, and basically the feeling you are left with is that this is a thoroughly over-hyped show that the posers and establishment will adore.
Perfect Days (2023)
Nothing
This movie has some nice cinematography and music, but apart from that it's just incredibly, incredibly - INCREDIBLY - boring. The few plot points that exist seem quite random, and 99% is left for the viewer to ponder.
I would imagine this could have worked well as a short film, but at 2 hours, it was just painful to sit through. It was interesting to see what this type of film was in the first 5-10 minutes, but after that it didn't give me anything more that I hadn't already seen or experienced already.
Fans of the director, and your typical film connoisseur/poser will claim to love this. Most people will not.
Hijack (2023)
Annoying from start to end, getting progressively worse
Ok, perhaps the first episode started decently, but this quickly deteriorated. I have no idea why the main character was given so much latitude by the other characters, as he showed zero redeeming qualities, zero skill and zero insight. That also makes it incredibly hard to care for anything he and the other characters does. Technically the show is seriously flawed, with so many illogical decisions and obvious falsehoods that there is little connection to reality. Perhaps this would have been better as a 3-episode show, as there don't seem to be enough content to drag it out for 7. The ending is just incredibly silly, and only makes the show worse. So many pathetic people, pathetic decisions, pathetic plot "twists"... you just sit there enraged after wasting your time watching it.
Mayans M.C.: Slow to Bleed Fair Son (2023)
Contrived, rushed ending, trivial solutions
This has happened to many TV shows. The writers suddenly need to tie up a lot of loose ends - very quickly. This seldom ends well, and this episode is no exception. Complex issues and conflicts that have been going on for years (or decades) are solved almost like magic, in minutes, with no clever way of compensating for it. Any sort of realism is non-existent.
Too many last-minute new angles and events were thrown in in the mix in an attempt to heighten the drama, but a lot of that was built on zero or little foundation and that way didn't stick the landing, or at least it seemed hollow to me.
The writers seem to fall back on the simple concept of death/exit/the end way too often to bail them out of their time-crunch. It's just too easy. Figuratively speaking: Order a nuclear strike. Watch the mushroom clouds. The end. Why bother coming up with anything clever, realistic or interesting?
Myself, I have grown to loathe almost every character on this show equally. Thus, I am not exactly sad to see any of them or the show itself end.
Prom Pact (2023)
Trite, with a horrible lead character
The story was not very interesting. The plot was very predictable. I feel like I have seen that same movie many, many times before. Acting was wooden and the dialogue was forced and not very believable. A "speech" late in the movie was especially horrible in that regard. In real life, people would have burst out laughing while in the movie it was seen as very deep and profound.
All of that could have been fine if the lead character was someone that I could be cheering for and actually cared what happened to. It's no joke, she is the absolute worst person shown in the entire movie. She is really an extremely privileged, narcissistic, selfish, manipulative liar, who believes she is a victim and doing good and being virtuous by liking the "correct" people and wearing T-shirts with the "right" slogans printed on them. I don't know if she has ever actually DONE anything decent in her life. The ending is especially bad.
The movie wants us to believe there is some serious character development going on here, but I didn't see any.
This Is Where I Leave You (2014)
They didn't stick the landing
It's quite obvious what this film sets out to do, but the execution is not good. Too many fumbles, and incoherent random bits that don't aid the storyline one bit.
I also came to dislike many of the characters I was probably meant to like, or just be fascinated by.
Rose Byrne is great as always, but she doesn't get a lot to work with.
The producers wanted this film to be many things, you can see the attempts along the way. Sadly the script needed a lot more work to come together as a cohesive package.
If anything this film actually makes me respect great movies more, in that there is something good filmmakers do that you enjoy, but don't really can't put your finger on. This movie helps show what the end result looks like when it's not quite there.
Prey (2022)
Poor writing
Even a fantastical plot has to be somewhat believable. This one is far, far from it. This über advanced killing machine defeated some things extremely easily and showed some extreme technology, skill and capability, but in other parts of the movie it doesn't even seem able to tie its own shoelaces. Of course "Girl Power" wins the day, the western people are all evil and/or stupid and the native Americans are pure, heroic and all good. More politics, more wokeism, more mediocrity being hailed as a masterpiece by the critics.
tick, tick...BOOM! (2021)
Boring amateurish community theater drivel
I couldn't stand this movie. I didn't find any artistic value in it at all. Is it supposed to be a parody of the lives of lame wannabe musical theater "artists"? Some kind of junior high school "Glee" performance marathon?
I really don't get it. Garfield can't sing. He really can't. The compositions are dull and uninspired. Nothing in the story gripped me, and halfway through the movie I just turned it off.
I like many musicals and the songs in them, so it's not like I hate the genre overall. I just didn't found anything to like in this piece.
Mayans M.C.: When the Breakdown Hit at Midnight (2022)
Extremely unlikable characters
Violent heroin-trafficking lowlifes with absolutely no moral code, spending all of their waking hours destroying everything they touch. Why should we care what happens to them? Why wouldn't we cheer for them all to die in their sleep? I don't know or care if this gets renewed for another season. I won't be watching. Even if watching morally reprehensible animals could be interesting, the writing and the extreme quick change of direction just seems forced and fake. As long as this show is named Mayans and JD Pardo is one of the main characters, my inner hope of seeing all of them wiped out either by SOA or law enforcement will never be answered anyway, so there is no point for me to continue watching. So disgusted that this is considered entertainment these days.
Space Force (2020)
It's ok I guess
I am generally a big fan of Steve Carrell. In this show the combination with Malkovich works well. There are other good supporting cast members also.
The stories are not the best, but generally there are some good content in there.
They should have dropped the entire Xyler character though.
WandaVision (2021)
I am horrified people see this as entertainment
Watching the first episode, I thought to myself: This is just trash. Surely I had to be misunderstanding something. The ratings on imdb were great, so I risked wasting some more time and watched 4 more episodes until I finally pulled the plug. Enraged over having wasted several hours on something that just brought me frustration, I want to warn anyone else to not make the same mistake.
I just want to ask. Where is the entertainment? What is funny, exciting, sweet, scary or interesting here?
Does some people get off on some sort of perceived superiority by mocking everyone and everything that does not fit into the modern woke identity politics agenda? Is mockery and scorn all that is needed for a great show these days?
If that is true, I have to ask what's left for the rest of us?
The only good thing I could find here was the costumes and set decor.
Fleabag (2016)
Trash
Put together a lot of over the top raunchy attempts at jokes, chalkboard screeching third wave feminism, horrible personalities, cruel behavior, self-destructive and manipulative people, and what else... then you have Fleabag.
It's not funny. It's not interesting. I really have a hard time figuring out what kind of mechanism takes place for people to enjoy this. I suspect the only actually thing it can be used for is to feel good about yourself if you are an equally horrible human being as the main character of this show.
The King's Man (2021)
Wokeism destroys all movies
I am so tired of movies like this. The preaching has to stop. I want to be entertained, not preached to.
The forced diversity makes any story seem unrealistic and contrived. How can anyone feel involved in something that is clearly so far from any reality that ever existed.
I often count how many times I pause a movie and do something else for a while. This movie is one of the top scorers in that category.
Only frustration overcomes the feeling of being bored.
Shut In (2022)
It's so refreshing!
It's so refreshing to be without the usual politics found in modern tv and movies.
What happens in this movie is something you can imagine actually happened somewhere in the world, with people just like the ones portrayed.
Daily Wire is a new player, but the quality of the production is surprisingly good. The kid actor also does a great job. It's so easy to spot when it doesn't work.
I had seen the trailer, but I was happily surprised when I saw the money. I was not able to predict what was going to happen, and the ending tied it all together nicely for me.
Lately I haven't been able to watch any tv show or movie without setting it on pause and going online to check the news, scroll through some social media, etc.. before going back to the movie. This film I watched from start to end without touching the remote.
Reacher (2022)
No, it wasn't that good
The actor playing Reacher cannot act. He just can't.
The lack of chemistry between the actors were palpable. Only a very, very, very few times could we see it.
The story was paint-by-numbers, slow and predictable. Nothing we haven't seen 1000 times before. No suspense, no real drama.
This being rated close to a 9 is just insane. Hopefully this will correct itself over time.
Peacemaker (2022)
Nothing positive to write about this show.
Nothing was funny. Everything was political. The first episode was a constant list of crossing off woke checkboxes for diversity, feminism, gender-roles, fat-pride, history of crime in America, gun laws, sexuality, same-sex marriage, sex difference in strength and agility, etc. Etc.
Why do they create shows like this? Is it only to please 50% of the market? Is there a political goal? Why even pretend this is intended to be entertainment?
I didn't laugh once. The script was a laundry list of clichés and paint-by-numbers writing. One of the goals is to mock the history and lifestyles of half the audience. Please enough now. Make it stop.
Krasnyy prizrak (2020)
Boring propaganda movie, Tarantino rip-off
This is a state-sponsored propaganda movie, and not a whole lot more than that. There is nothing original about this. The stylistic approach has been copied by x number of Tarantino films.
The characters are one-dimensional, and the action is slow and extremely predictable.
Through some kind of super-natural being this modern story telling attempts to rewrite history and add a new layer of heroism that was never there. It should not have been necessary, there are more than enough stories already that could have been retold in an interesting fashion, but the people behind this movie was very lazy and did not want to put in the extra effort that is required.
Ted Lasso (2020)
It's not funny, it's not charming, it's just boring and cringy.
Over 70 thousand people voted this show a 10????
Really? What am I missing here? There are no funny jokes. None of the characters are interesting. If you have never been outside of USA and have only heard about foreign countries in fairy tales and such, then maybe you find the "tea is gross" jokes funny, and laugh of the other "omg that word means something different than it does in my country"-jokes.
There is also the "white men are the worst" angle, like you find in every show nowadays. Nothing new there.
It is really so incredibly bad. The imdb scores scare me, because it means either there is significant corruption in the ratings system, or there are hordes of people out there that have absolutely no clue what comedy is supposed to be. It also would mean there is absolutely no incentive for the TV studios to even try making something good, as mindless drivel like this is more than sufficient to get the ratings.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
Total letdown, such a big contrast to episode 9
Episode 9 was one of the greatest episodes I have ever seen of any tv show. The contrast to the hastily written and weird finale is stunning.
It just seems to me they needed to wrap up a lot of stuff very quickly, and forgot to tie everything together in a way that made sense.
I am so disappointed. I was really looking forward to the last episode after that amazing episode 9. I also think most of the Dexter New Blood series was great. What always was good with Dexter was the intense suspense, and feeling of dread and uncertainty. Nothing of that in episode 10. Incidents went by way too fast, and I just feel cheated. They made a mockery of the entire series with that awful finale.
C'mon C'mon (2021)
Boring, annoying, pretentious
I couldn't even finish this movie I was bored out of my mind from the first second of the movie. When not bored I was annoyed by every single character in the movie. I didn't like any of them, nor did I find them interesting, just annoying.. very annoying.
I should have wised up when I noticed the film was shot in black and white. That's the ultimate sign of a pretentious film maker.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
This was totally unnecessary...
It's all going downhill. I only really liked the first movie. Now we are in cash-grab dumpster fire territory. The original actors are too old, and none of the new characters are any interesting at all. They all seem to either have some radical revolutionary personal stylists and personalities.
The new agent Smith is especially awful. And a lot of the rest just seems like cheap copies of the great stuff brought to us in the first movie.
The storylines are all spent and used up. Trying to extend this further just gives us very very far fetched ideas.
All these reboots coming out of Hollywood shows the lack of originality. They should have stopped by now.
La casa de papel (2017)
Watch the first seasons, maybe...
This show is highly overrated. It started out trying to be very clever, but devolved eventually into a driveling mess where the same type of drama is repeated way too many times in different fashion.
My biggest issue is that I find every single character in this series to be despicable lowlifes. That fact makes it difficult to watch, as it very quickly becomes irrelevant to me which side wins or loses.
To those that disagree. Please analyze the actions of each character, and ask yourself what the REAL consequences of those actions are. If every person on earth acted in the exact same way, what would happen? Well... nothing good.
It doesn't help that the writing jump sharks, battle is over the top unrealistic, modern real-life tactics nowhere to be found, soap-opera drama between the main characters, and a synthetic and highly crafted script trying too hard to prop up bad people and make them heroes, when they clearly are not.
While all people are scum here, some are hilariously evil to the point that it's just laughable. The writers set up unrealistic scenarios to wash their hands of evil actions performed by someone else, but it doesn't absolve them nevertheless.
The politics of this show is shoved in your face so violently that is impossible to miss. Great for those that lean that way, but not for the rest of us.
To the next team trying to create a clever "heist" show, remember this: As soon as someone hurts someone else either physically or emotionally, they ARE the bad guys no matter what you are desperately trying to convey to the audience. If they continue doing the same stuff over and over again, it's even worse.
The Last Duel (2021)
Great movie, great action and also some food for thought
I really liked this movie. It was interesting to see the different perspectives of the main protagonists. The drama increased towards the climactic end, and I was enthralled with the action.
The fighting scenes were good, and there were a lot of interesting topics illustrated.
Much better than most of the awful stuff being released nowadays. Not perfect, but very enjoyable and exciting.
