Right off the bat I'll just say I've never been a fan of animated movies - manga, marvel, DC etc so I kind of just skipped past this on Netflix. One day by total chance whilst looking for something to watch I left the cursor on the trailer whilst making a brew, and what played out looked both impressive and intriguing.
Fast forward to just finishing the series I can honestly say the entertainment gods must of intervened that day because this ladies and gents is fantastic! Love, friendship, betrayal, revenge, loveable/loathsome characters -coupled with exceptional writing and outstanding animation make for a truly cinematic experience. This isn't a cartoon this is a full on adult narrative with many adult themes throughout (revenge at the forefront). A serious and compelling story about identity and belonging in a society that loathes and rejects its main protagonist whilst also maintaining humour in the right places. The slashing action is fierce - both stylistically and bloody in equal measure!
I'm not a historian by any stretch but the series also gives a bit of insight into Edo period society and its culture. At 8 episodes it's not overly long with each episode well paced you cannot help but binge it! I won't say anymore other than to watch it and fingers crossed there'll be a second season.

Where to start with this one!?? There are creature features that are so bad they're good but this one is just bad.
The VFX are back dated about 30 years, making the death scenes almost cartoonish, the characters are also dispensable, in fact the most fun is the heinous mayor - granted a sure fire caricature riff on mayor Vaughn from jaws!
One other thing that is apparent is this film is doubling as two entities: a popcorn creature feature and a cautionary tale regarding the environment, in fairness that message isn't completely rammed down the audiences throats and the seas need to be protected at all costs.
Like a lot of modern day horror, the main protagonists make perplexing decisions that end up getting them killed or missing appendages but if you enjoy silliness like the Meg, deep blue sea etc then it will likely entertain you, even if the runtime is 20 minutes too long.

Nowhere is one of those movies on Netflix that you sometimes can overlook or watch and expect absolutely nothing from but I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised!
A Spanish production directed by Albert pinto tells the story of pregnant Mia fleeing a totalitarian country, who must fight for her life when a violent storm knocks the container in which she has been hiding overboard. Trapped, and alone Mia gives birth and is forced to survive to save her baby.
The film is taut, visceral in places (self surgery, giving birth) and quite moving in parts. One of the fundamentals of a good survival story is caring about the protagonist, you actually do feel for Mia and what would be a nightmare scenario.
This could quite easily of turned into a political statement about migration but refrains from the common, cliched Netflix approach. Some minor implausibility aside - would she and a newborn die of hypothermia, highly likely but that doesn't detract from the film's invention and mias ingenuity to survive any less compelling and heartwarming. If you enjoy films like cast away, the grey and other "against the element/odds" Nowhere should keep you watching right till the end.
