Godfather of Harlem is an MGM and ABC production based on the true events during the 1960's Harlem and it is prequel to the movie American Gangster. The first season depicts Bumpy Johnson's (Forest Whitaker) return to Harlem after serving 10 years in prison only to find Harlem is being run by the Italian mafia. Bumpy faces the Genoese crime family led by Vincent "Chin" Gigante (Vincent D'Onofrio) over control of the city. Malcolm X (Nigel Thatch) joins an alliance with Bumpy to help advance his political support and faith and in return strengthen his position against the Italian crime family. Several historical events took place during the first season from the assassination of President Kennedy and explores the social climate during the 60's. The series also has a string cast of characters from Giancarlo Esposito who portrays a New York Senator and local preacher Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Demi Singleton and Antoinette Crowe-Legacy played Bumpy's daughters, Iifenesh Hadera as his wife, Lucy Fry portrays Chhin's daughter who is in love with a black singer. Rafi Gavron plays Chhin's henchman, Chazz Palminteri as the head of the Bonanno crime family, and the late Paul Sorvino as Frank Costello. This is such a good show with a great script and a wonderful cast. There are many seasons to follow.
Sherlock & Daughter is a CW series created and written by Brandon Foley. The story begins with a young American girl named Amelia Rojas (Blu Hunt) who leaves her home in California after her mother's murder. Amelia makes her way across the pond to England to find her father Sherlock Holmes (David Twelis) who plays quite a convincing role as Doyle's fictional character. In all of the books, comics, movies and any other shows there was never any mention of Sherlock ever having a family or an affair with anyone to convince us that he would be a father. The series tries to solve a conspiracy that stretches to the highest government level and to solve Amelia's mother's murder. The fortunate part of the script was the smart use of clues, the maps, the costumes for the time period. The one thing I didn't like was the idea of American character being the daughter of the famous detective and they couldn't come up with a better title. We also learn Professor Moriarty (Dougray Scott) is spending time in prison and his son Michael Wylie (Joe Klocek) has become the leader of the red ribbon gang. Michael and Amelia do have a connection but doesn't pan out. The series is ok, nothing great, doesn't really compare to the movies but for CW I guess it fits. I would continue to watch it if there are going to future seasons.
Handmaid's Tale: Third Season starts out with June being assigned to a new commander after the Waterford's house burns down. Bradley Whitford joins the show as Commander Lawrence the one person who helps June and the Marthas with their objectives to help save as many kids from Gilead as possible. Commander Lawrence is unlike the rest, he is compassionate yet cruel, but we learn he was the architect behind the creation of Gilead. This season June becomes ruthless, she kills off High Commander Winslow (Christopher Meloni) as he tried to rap her. She also cohorts to kill Lawrence's wife (Julie Dretzin) after she is traumatized by the events she overdoses and June doesn't call for help. By the end of the season we finally find justice when Serena agrees to be a double agent with the help of an American CIA agent Mark Truello (Sam Jaeger) who convinced them they may be able to get Nichole back from Canada only to be taken into justice for their actions. We finally get a backstory on Aunt Lydia and learn she just to be a schoolteacher. She was as ruthless then as she is now. Overall the season was captivating with some judgement against those that hurt June and other handmaids. The next season is coming up soon.
