Level Cross (2024)
A Good Psychological Thriller: Which for me is a hidden gem
A nice movie overall with a good story which explores the complexities in human emotions and looks at how 2 psychopaths interact with each other in different way. The acting was the highlight with especially Asif ali doing a brilliant job in an experimental role which has been done by him rarely. Sharfudeen was my second highlight who did the role with great conviction and resolve. The other aspects of story could have been better as it was slow and some of the scenes felt a little bit predictable but the climax was the true highlight in this front for me as it blown out of the park and made the story not predictable at all. Overall a hidden gem.
Por Thozhil (2023)
A good thriller missing a solid conclusion
I watched this movie recently and I felt that it was solid for a thriller movie but missing a good climax and lot of stories which didn't make any sense from a thriller point of view. I felt the movie could have been more tight with plot and story avoiding parallel love stories which collides with the plot of the movie. That characters have put their best foot forward in terms of their performances but the story and plot could have been timed well and thrilling aspect was missing because of the storyline
In conclusion a solid thriller but the story could have been more tight with it's plotlines.
RDX: Robert Dony Xavier (2023)
A full on action film which could have had a best story
I watched RDX just today. It is one of the best Action film I have seen in recent years. The film's action is made well with great camera work and also a great choreography. The slow motion in those action scenes were wonderful and apt to make me feel the impact of the scene. The editing and direction deserves another kudos as the scenes were arranged in a flow with impactful scenes were added beautifully added before the action sequences.
Only downside I felt about the film was that the story could have been made better especially the emotional scenes could have been made more meatier.
Overall the best Action film I have seen this year.
Purusha Pretham (2023)
A Neo-Noir underrated masterpiece with a surprising ending
Watched Purusha Pretham and was amazed by the way the film used the Neo-noir theme especially in the colour grading and also in the camera angles. The director Krishand did a great job in using the Neo-noir well and also in introducing an issue of unidentified bodies and how they are handled badly by the police and other authorities. I seriously didnt know the issue and the end credits of the movie clearly solidified the issue by bringing the people who handle these cases in real life. The other aspect which I liked was the use of comedy which was natural and engaging and didnt feel like a miss.
Overall, a highly recommended and underrated film of this year.
Freedom Fight (2022)
A very interesting Anthology which could have been synced and connected better
I had the chance to watch Freedom Fight and its was after a long time I was watching such an interesting anthology from Mollywood. All the short films where different and unique in nature but was based on the theme freedom. One of my most favorite part was Geetha unchained and also the last 2 short films which discussed 2 important issues of old age and also the power dynamics well. There were certain short films in the anthology which felt amateurish in its editing and also direction which reduced the message in these films.
Overall an interesting anthology on Freedom which could have improved with better direction and editing.
Melvilasom (2011)
One of the most underrate Movie in Mollywood
I watched Melvilasom today and the movie overall was refreshing because of a brave attempt at trying a new genre. There are aspects I liked about the movie. One of the major aspect was the use of the courtroom as the only set where the movie is playing out which is unique in the Indian Movie Industry even to this day. I also liked the use of dialogues eventhough little philosophical but had logic and made the non seen episodes in the movie visualizing and clear and the best dialogues of the movie was delivered by Suresh Gopi who has fascinated me after Apothecary. But there is one thing I felt the movie could have done better and that is giving more context to the life of Ramachandran which could have provided more depth to the movie and also some camera angles were a bit shaky which reduced the intensity of the shots.
Overall a good attempt to try a fresh genre in the Indian film industry and highly recomended for any court room drama lovers.
Romancham (2023)
Very interesting and to an extend funny horror comedy thriller
Watched Romancham twice and I felt that the movie is an interesting comedy horror thriller. The movie tries to put in elements of comedy which works out to an extend with most of them being situational in nature especially in the intro scenes and some scenes after the ouija board try. The horror aspect in the movie was lacking a bit for me as I didnt feel scared enough even with the whole ouija board playing and the consequences. This could have been enhanced with use of more brazen horror scenes. The story is not a new one and it reminiscent of the 2007 during the height of the ouija frenzy in India and kerala which adds flavour to the movie.
Overall an interesting horror comedy thriller a less tried genre in India.
Traffic (2011)
A must watch film which is average compared to current Malayalam films
I watched traffic when it was first released in 2011 and since then I watched the film at least 10 times including today. At the first glance the film was completely revolutionary with maybe being the first film in Malayalam to use hyperlink narrative style and also the inclusion of depth in the films with all characters backstory. But when I watched the film now I feel that the film was sub par in comparison to today's Malayalam films and it makes me happy and proud at how the industry has changed and became truly global in a short duration. Some of the errors I found today are the background score which was not thrilling enough and felt plain here and there. The story could have been better written with the main part the journey shown in the beginning instead of middle of the film.
Overall one of my all time favorite Malayalam film and a film that created the new wave in Malayalam film industry.
Kadhavaseshan (2004)
Such an emotional rolercoaster ride of a film which made me think about this world
Kadhavaseshan was one of the most underrated and an emotional rollercoaster for me. I watched the film and liked several aspects of the film. Firstly, the way the story is knit is very unique in comparison to other dileep films. The fil, tells the story of gopinathan not through but through the others who are connected with him and benefited from him and it is also done through the inquisitive nature of his future fiance which increased the impact of the film. Secondly, the film used emotions in the right manner without being over the top which made the film connect with me as a person and also made me cry especially the climax which pierced through my heart. Thirdly, the film conveyed an important message of humanity dying and how the hatred between the communities is killing that which was clearly stated in the final dialogues for the shame of living which is apt.
Overall one of the best film of Dileep and most underrated film in Malayalam movie industry.
T.D. Dasan Std: VI. B (2010)
One of the best and soul searching Malayalam movie I have ever seen
TD Dasan Std:VI. B is one of the most interesting and well created film in the Malayalam film industry. There were multitude of aspects I liked about the film. Firstly, I liked the subtilities used in the film with less conversations and more focus on the letter and emotions which makes you feel sad for dasan. Secondly the main characters of the film the 2 children Dasa and the town girl both acted exceptionally to give us such an emotional visual treat. Thirdly the film was revolutionary for its inclusion of children in the main cast which was less seen in the industry at that time which increased depth of the film along with a flowing plot and storyline.
Overall a true classic of a film which should have got more traction and is underrated for sure.
Bhoothakaalam (2022)
A good Horror film with a refreshing approach compared to other Malayalam films
Bhoothakaalam is an interesting and a unique way of portarying horror aspect in many ways. One of the first aspect is the subtle use of horror and matching BGM which creates that tense feeling and is different from the loud noisy style of many Mollywood Horror films. The second aspect i liked was that the film tried to portray the way mental health is treated and perceived in Kerala which was interesting and to an extend pretty refreshing. One of the aspect which I felt the film could have done better is the way the horror aspect was unleashed fully in the last scenes which could have been given more depth with more horror scenes throughout with a same flow which could have connected well with me. The second aspect is the unnecessary inclusion of romantic scenes which destroyed the horror aspect of the film for me a bit especially the song which could have been avoided.
Overall an interesting horror with a refreshing approach in Mollywood.
Minnal Murali (2021)
One of the best superhero film I have ever seen which stays true to its roots
I watched Minnal Murali over 3 times and undoubtedly every time it was refreshing and made me awestuck on how grounded our athmanirbhar super hero is. The film for me a true lesson to all the so called big budget superhero films i.e. Marvel and DC on how to make a great superhero film which uses the right amount of VFX and emotions wells. I liked how the character arc of the superhero Minnal Murali is shown with its roots in the small village but universal in style and nature. One of the most unique aspect of this film is how the villain is portrayed as a anti-hero with his own reason for being a villain.
Overall one of the most underrated and best super-hero film of the century beats every DC Marvel Film out of the park.
Philips and the Monkey Pen (2013)
One of the best movies in India which tells the story from the perspective of a child
I rewatched the movie during my freetime and I felt that the movie is one of the best movies in India which narrates the whole story from the perspective of children. There are several things I liked about the movie. First thing was the way the story was narrated which made me feel nostalgic about my childhood especially the character Ryan which was presented well. The second thing which I liked about the movie was the use of mystery and also the childs curiosity which jelled well with the story of the movie. Third aspect which I liked about the movie was the second half and also the climax which taught an important lesson of not using shortcuts in life with the Monkey Pen being the example of both the shortcut and also the part of the transformation in Ryan.
Overall one of the best child movie in India with a wonderful storytelling style from the perspective of a child.
An Cailín Ciúin (2022)
An Average movie but with an interesting method of storytelling
I watched this movie as a suggestion from my Irish Language instructor. When I was watching the movie I got a lot of positive vibes which made the movie interesting. The storytelling style of the movie through the eyes of the child was the most interesting aspect of this movie which eventhough not new was refreshing to say the least. The movie could have worked on the length which I felt was too long with a lot of unnecessary scenes added to increase the flow which proved to be counter-productive in nature. The movie could have also worked on character introductions and also could have included more Background scores which could have connected the movie to me as an audience well.
Overall an interesting movie with an interesting method of storytelling but could have worked more on the scenes and background score.
Hridayam (2022)
Average movie which portrays a fake nostalgia
Hridayam for me was an average movie which didnt make me completely nostalgic and I felt that the movie was too much overhyped for its show of toxic masculinity. I liked the songs of the movie and thats it. The story in the movie wasnt well made and included all the usual tropes of a college romanance with over-glorification of college life which as such is not true. I was a college student and I cannot relate to many of the scenes in the movie especially the romance parts and also the creation of stereotypes that if you are a college student love is an important part of that mix which is not true. I also felt that this movie is an amplified and loud version of classmates with scenes very much similar without the student political aspect.
Overall, the film creates a fake nostalgia with an average storytelling and good songs.
Batla House (2019)
A good movie which tried not to take sides while portraying a real incident
I rewatched Batla House again and I felt that the movie which I thought was awesome is only good as compared to many of the movies which portays real life incidents without the body-building scenes. While watching this again I felt the story could have been worked out well without the inclusion of the women objectification music which didnt sync well with the story. The movie ending I felt was little haphazard and also rushed to my liking. I also felt that the movie didnt do complete justice to the incidents in Batla house and tried to take sides in many of the scenes which could have been avoided.
Overall a good try at telling the incidents in Batla House but could have avoided the female Objectification scenes and also the biasness in the movie to portray one side as right.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
An Overhyped Average Movie with a weak story but overused VFX
I had a chance to rewatch Avengers: Endgame. I felt that the movie was overhyped by the media and also by the Hollywood industry to a larger extend. The movie didnt have a proper story and used the normal superhero mixup formula with the same narrative of white superheros saving the world. One of the things which annoyed me about this movie was the overuse of VFX which was supposed to be for entertainment and to transport to another world but I felt it was a waste of movie which could have been spend well on creating a better storyline and connecting well with the people.
Overall an average movie with a huge wastage of VFX and money.
Padavettu (2022)
Average Movie which did a lackluster job of discussing land rights
For me Padavettu was an average movie with a average story but good Dialogues. I felt than Nivin Paulis acting was same as in Premam but with a different lens which made me dissapointed as the trailer overhyped the movie to a larger extend. The movie did a haphazard to discuss and throw more light on the land rights and farmers rights which made me loose interest in the movie. The first half was below average with the background of the characters not given enough depth or discussed well. The second half was average as it tried to bring the issue but as said earlier to no avail and the depth wasnt brought out well.
Overall, an average to below average movie which didnt show complete justice to the Farmers Rights issue.
The Great Indian Kitchen (2021)
One of the best Oscar Worthy film from Kerala with a strong story beating Decision to leave out of park
It's been a great surprise to see such a realistic and shocking presentation of reality of patriarchy and how women are being opressed in the household made me feel sorry for my mother. The great Indian Kitchen is one of the best films I have seen in my life which stays true to the name with a well thought out and structured storytelling. I especially liked the scenes wherein the movie used parallel editing which showed both sides of the patriarchy. I also liked the subtility of the villain in the film who is not loud but shows their power and dominance through fear structures which made me feel disgusted towards my father.
Overall a great film and also Oscar Worthy than many of the films which received Oscar I.e.Parasitr.
V1 Murder Case (2019)
Tried to put a good message but with a weak bgm and also character Arc
V1 tried their level best to portray the reality of the honor killing and caste based discrimination in the Indian Society. I felt that this message was too rushed in the movie and a prelude was not provided in the previous scenes. The movie could have also worked on its bgm as it makes a good suspense thriller movie and the bgm is too weak and mellow in nature. The main storyline is to an extend shodly written with no focus given to one aspect and touches on many aspects at the same time like a kichidi or upma. The main characters in the movie are also not introduced well in the movie as I wanted to know more about their intentions especially the killers.
Overall an average atempt at highlighting an important issue but with a shoddy storyline lacking soul.
Detective (2007)
An Average Thriller with the most annoying and useless BGM
The movie Detective is interesting that it was first time such a style of movie was made in Malayalam. But in comparison to other thrillers and especially the movies such as Forensic, Anjam Pathira, Rakshan and so on the movie is average with a very mediocre one man show approach which was also old school that time also. One of the most annoying part of the movie was the BGM which was very flavourless and didnt sync well with the mood and story of the movie. The scenes could have been arranged better with a lot of gaps in the story and also the lack of background of the main characters are a proof that this movie is average.
In conclusion, I think this movie is comparitively better than Drishyam to an extend.
Mathilukal (1990)
The most underrated movie of all times and one of the best in the world
I watched the Movie Mathilukal several times and today I got a chance to rewatch and experience the journey of Vaikom Mohammed Basheer in Jail through this movie. The movie eventhough a love story coments on the situation of political prisoners in Jail which is even true to an extend these days and also points to the several aspects of the Malayali society. The movie is well grounded to its context and gives 100% justice to the novel of the same name. The is a perfect tribute to the 2 important persons in the Malayalam literature and movie industry Adoor Gopalakrishnan and also Vaikom Mohammed Basheer.
Overall, I encourage everyone even if you are not a malayali to watch this movie.
John Luther (2022)
Could have been the best crime thriller if not for the clumsy and forced ending
The movie John Luther for me is a underrated movie. I saw it today and felt pretty thrilled with the low key storyline and also the exclusion of over the top mystery aspect which is quite prevalent in other Malayalam Crim Thriller Movie. The Movie has tried to be as grounded as possible by showing an ordinary hero with also having the DR Devil aspect included in the movie in a subtle way. But one of the major sticking points which reduced the rating of the movie is the lackluster climax and also the forced addition of calls for a second part which could have avoided or could have been given more context. Overall a good crime thriller movie to watch and good to see Jaysurya back in a pretty serious role after Sunny.
Pathemari (2015)
The Perfect Eye-opener to the Malayalis in Kerala and also to the International Humanitarian Community
I have seen this movie several times, but when I watch it now doing a course of International Humanitarian Action I am able to find parallel between some of the struggles of the Malayali Migrants at that time of 1950s and also the Syrian Refugees struggling to reach Europe. This movie clearly shows the need to change Refugee laws and also better the condition of the refugees and Migrants in host countries. The other aspect which I felt this movie throws a spotlight on this the current treatment of Malayali Migrants from Middle East which has to an extend stayed the same since the release of the movie. This needs a change and this movie is an open question of why that perception change hasnt happened fully.?
Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (2022)
Pretty Interesting movie but with an Abrupt ending
I went to watch this movie with my Romanian Friend and she said the movie was nice,, Which I also agree. She liked how the movie treated important issues with the use of humour especially the acting by Darshana and Basil who did their respective roles in a natural without the feeling of artificiality. I especially liked the begining scenes and repetition with different perspectives given which made the movie relatable and a visual treat. Could have worked more on the ending to make it in sync with the previous scenes and could have been detailed a little bit more. Overall a wonderfully directed and acted movie and must watch to understand the issues of women in India especially in Kerala which still exists.
