9. ‘Borderlands’ (2024)
An adaptation so bad you’ll feel it in your teeth, ‘Borderlands’ was troubled from the start. Gearbox Software’s beloved video game series is known for its rich lore, hyperviolence, and adult themes that don’t make it an obvious fit for a PG-13 feature. Still, Roth seems to have made matters worse — delivering an almost catostrophic consideration of the source material that…unless you’re the world’s biggest Cate Blanchett fan…isn’t even worth picking for parts.
Starring Blanchett, Ariana Greenblatt, Kevin Hart, Florian Munteanu, Jamie Lee Curtis, and the voice of Jack Black, this action adventure comedy sees a pack of rag-tag buddies — who rarely if ever connect with each other, let alone the audience — searching for a cache of ancient alien technology on the dangerous planet of Pandora. Sure, this thing boasts a chase scene through a literal waterfall of piss, but caught between two audiences (and seemingly mired in studio interference) Roth’s latest is a boring outlier lacking any of his incendiary style. If only Lionsgate’s revolving door of talent had kept on rotating.
