Mew

Mew was one of the original elusive legendary Pokémon. It was only obtainable from a special Nintendo Event, or through a specific glitch in Red, Blue/Green, and Yellow Versions. Since then, many events have made Mew widely available, thought it is still one of the most interesting.

Mew is hands-down one of the most interesting Pokémon since when Red and Blue/Green Versions were in their infancies. When Red and Green Versions were originally released in Japan, not even Nintendo was aware that Shigeki Morimoto had left Mew programmed into the games. For years, fans searched and searched for ways to find Mew, with a popular method being an attempt to move a truck in Vermilion City by using Strength. However, as mentioned above, Mew could only be obtained through official Nintendo events. Since then, Mew has become not only one of the most famous Pokémon, but also an influence for other Pokémon in later generations. For these reasons and more, it's no wonder Mew is still a gem to Pokémon fans today.

There is a theory that another Pokémon, Ditto, is a failed attempt at cloning Mew. Both Mew and Ditto are able to learn the move Transform, which allows a Pokémon to take the form and moveset of its opponent in a battle. Both their normal and shiny forms are the same color, and their weights are the same. This has led some people to believe that Ditto is a failed attempt at cloning Mew. However, in issue 236 of the magazine Game Informer, Junichi Masuda, producer of the Pokémon games, revealed that Ditto and Mew are, in fact, "individual life forms of their own".

Strategies for Mew in-battle are varied, since Mew is able to learn any TM/HM and move learned from the Move Tutor, with exceptions made for Frenzy Plant, Hydro Cannon, Blast Burn, Draco Meteor, Grass Pledge, Fire Pledge, Water Pledge, Secret Sword, and Relic Song. Due to this, people are able to customize its moveset to an astounding degree. One possible moveset for Mew is known as the Swords Dance moveset. The moves are as follows: 1.) Swords Dance, 2.) Drain Punch, 3.) Zen Headbutt, and 4.) Sucker Punch. The held item should be the Life Orb, and the nature should be Jolly. It should have 252 EVs in Attack, 4 in Defense, and 252 in Speed. Swords Dance raises Attack and allows for physical sweeping. Zen Headbutt is a good physical move and receives STAB. Drain Punch is a good physical move, and potentially helps Mew regain some health. Sucker Punch earns priority.

There are many other good strategies for Mew, but this one is used often by competitive players (provided, of course, that they are allowed to use Mew). Given Mew's versatility, it shouldn't be hard to create a strategy that works for you.

  • FireRed - A POKÉMON of South America that was thought to have been extinct. It is very intelligent and learns any move.
  • LeafGreen - So rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide.
