Hoth

Hoth is a Planet in the Star Wars universe. It is a desolate planet covered in ice and snow, and is the sixth planet of the remote Hoth system. It is located in the Anoat sector, which is a rarely traveled portion of the Outer Rim Territories. It was the site of the Rebel Alliance's Echo Base, which was discovered by the Empire in 3 ABY, kick starting the Battle of Hoth.

Description

The planet consists of a molten metallic core with dichotomous crust. Its entire surface is covered by a frozen ocean, except for the volcanic fissures that open up steam vents, which deposit rocks on the darker patches on the glacier plains. It is also surrounded by three, nameless moons that orbit the planet. 

Its frigid biosphere allows for a minimal food chain of the predatory wampas, the herbivorous Hoth hogs, the omnivorous tauntans, and several rodent species. The average temperature of the planet is -61 Celsius. Around Echo Base, near the planet's equator, in the northern hemisphere, daytime temperatures reached -32 Celsius. 

History

The planet is said to be in existence since as early as 4000 BBY. After the destruction of the first Death Star by the end of A New Hope, Princess Leia and the rest of the Rebal Alliance abandoned its headquarters on Yavin 4, and found a planet where they believed the Empire wouldn't search for them. 

To guard against discovery by Imperial probe droids, Rebel scouts mounted native bipedal lizards called tauntans. On one such recon missions, Luke Skywalker was attacked by a wampa, but thanks to the Force and Han Solo Luke was able to escape with his life. 

The Empire would eventually discover the Rebels thanks to a probe droid that sent imagery of the Rebels' equipment to the Empire. At the Battle of Hoth, the Empire rode massive AT-AT walkers that engaged the Alliance's speedsters and troops. Though the major key players from the Alliance would escape capture, it was still a costly defeat for them.
