Unfortunately, as of August, 2022, LastPass has been hacked. It&#8217;s unclear how much customer information was exposed &#8211; password vaults seem to be in the hands of the hackers! LastPass has not been upfront about the severity of the incident, which doesn&#8217;t inspire much confidence.<\/p>\n<p>In general, we remain fans of password managers (for now) for the average consumer (<a href=\"\/web-browsing-privacy-everything-you-need-to-know-2022\/\">check out more security tips here<\/a>). There are Open Source alternatives to LastPass, such as BitWarden. As with all things cybersecurity, it pays to research the alternatives and stay vigilant.<\/p>\n\n<p>We&#8217;re posting the guide here for posterity or in case parts of it remain useful. Be careful out there, privacy people!<\/p>\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" id=\"reddit-embed\" src=\"https:\/\/www.redditmedia.com\/r\/technology\/comments\/ztx9k5\/the_lastpass_hack_was_worse_than_the_company\/?ref_source=embed&amp;ref=share&amp;embed=true\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin allow-popups\" style=\"border: none;\" height=\"126\" width=\"640\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This guide will teach you everything you need to know about LastPass.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advanced security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cool features.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And three entirely different case studies.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s get started.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Chapter 1: Password 101&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Passwords are the most important part of any account security.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This section will teach you how to make strong password that is difficult to guess, but also easy to remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">(finish writing chapter intro)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s Typically Told:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019ve all been told to use a password that is&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use at least 10 characters&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use letters&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use numbers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Avoid using the same password for more than one account.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, following these requirements can still produce a weak password.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, Password123! Meets all the above criteria.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the above format is very predictable and easy to crack.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usenix.org\/conference\/soups2019\/presentation\/pearman\">Sarah Pearman co-authored a study on passwords.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Sarah puts it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf a password that you use is in the top 5,000, 50,000 or even 500,000 most commonly-used passwords, it\u2019s very likely to be guessed, or cracked.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Solution?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What You Should Actually Do:<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use a passphrase.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A passphrase is a simple method for producing master passwords that are memorable yet challenging to crack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It contains at least 20 to 30 characters that only make sense to you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Combined with LastPass\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Advanced_Encryption_Standard\">AES 256-bit encryption<\/a>, passphrases will take many lifetimes to crack.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now let\u2019s look at some examples of passphrases.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For this example, let\u2019s say I\u2019m interested in keto.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My passphrase will probably look something like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>IstartedKetoJuly4,2022<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>whenIstartedKeto,IhadDiarheafor3striaghtDays!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>whenIstartedKeto,IwasSickfor3striaghtDays!&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice how these passphrases are random, unique, and easy to remember.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just be sure to add a few symbols, numbers, and uppercase letters somewhere in the passphrase to increase its strength.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Update Your Master Password<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ready to update your master password?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All you need to do is go to <strong>Account Settings<\/strong> in the bottom left-hand corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image manager.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But how does it work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And how to set it up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Well, LastPass has some pretty nifty features that make saving your username and passwords an absolute cinch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And in this chapter, I\u2019ll show you exactly how to set them up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #1: Download BrowserExtension<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allows you to save passwords and automatically log into any site on the internet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it couldn\u2019t be more easy to set up.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All you have to do is visit your browser\u2019s plug-in store and download the LastPass browser extension.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or you can visit <a href=\"https:\/\/lastpass.com\/misc_download2.php\">this page<\/a> to find and download the browser extension directly from LastPass:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" we\u2019ll discuss that later in Chapter 4.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, let\u2019s move on to the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #2: Download Mobile App<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The major downside to LastPass free account is that you can only have the mobile or the desktop version.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you can\u2019t have both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They give you a chance to try both version out before you have to fully commit.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naturally, I went with the desktop version.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But I found it super annoying to manually type in my login credential on my mobile device.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you\u2019re like me, you probably log in to your online accounts from your phone as much as you do from your computer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, I finally cracked and bought the paid version.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But here\u2019s the question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Was the paid version worth it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two words:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hell yeah.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Besides, it\u2019s only $36 per year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Step #3: Download Authenticator App<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LastPass Authenticator app is a multifactor authentication mobile app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once activated, the LastPass Authenticator app adds an additional layer of security to your standard username and password.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Paired with a fingerprint scan, the LastPass Authenticator app is actually more secure than your master password.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First, go to <strong>Account Setting<\/strong>, select <strong>Passwordless Option<\/strong>, and click<strong> Enable Passwordless<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data are stored by LastPass in what is called a \u201cpassword vault\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine it as a physical safe for your digital valuables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the LastPass vault, you can:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Launch websites<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create strong passwords&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Log in to online accounts&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything you&#8217;ve saved, such as passwords, notes, and credit card information, can be secured in your LastPass vault.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once in the vault, your data is encrypted and kept secret (even from LastPass).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let\u2019s see how the password vault works.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Add Sites<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adding sites is pretty straight forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\"
