Read on for sample itineraries to inspire your next trip and help you unlock the finest outdoor experiences that each area has to offer.
Gravel Biking in the Maine Woods
If you live for the moment the concrete beneath your bike turns into crushed gravel, you belong in the Maine Woods. AMC has permanently protected 114,000 acres (and counting!) of forests, lakes, and ponds as part of its Maine Woods Initiative (MWI). It’s not just a conservation achievement. It’s home to some of the best gravel biking on the East Coast.
Family Hut Hike
If you’ve got children in tow, AMC’s High Mountain Huts make it easy for the whole family to take in the splendor of the White Mountains. With AMC’s hut croo providing dinner and breakfast to all overnight guests, you can focus on spending more quality time with your kids. Slow down, pack light, and enjoy the company of other trailblazing families who rely on the warm hospitality of our huts at the end of a joyful adventure. Discover ways to stack kid-friendly lodge and hut stays to create an unforgettable traverse.
The Presidential Traverse
It’s a legendary hike for good reason: the “Presi Traverse,” as some call it, takes you to New Hampshire’s five highest peaks. Officially beginning at the peak of Mt. Madison and running south through Mt. Adams, Mt. Jefferson, Mt. Washington, Mt. Monroe, Mt. Eisenhower, and Mt. Pierce, the Presidential Traverse is a challenging, but breathtaking tour of the White Mountains National Forest. Find out how AMC’s High Mountain Huts can give you a comfortable place to lay your head along the way.
The Pemigewasset Wilderness
Over the course of 32 miles, backpackers on the Pemi Loop experience everything that makes the White Mountains so special: forays above treeline, technical rock scrambles, eight summits above 4,000 feet in elevation, and AMC’s famed High Mountain Huts. Highlights include the Franconia Ridgeline, considered one of the nation’s most breathtaking trails, and panoramic views on the Bonds. Most hikers take two to four days to complete the loop; read our recommended itinerary for more ideas.
Lodge-to-Lodge Skiing in the Maine Woods
AMC operates three lodges in Maine’s 100-Mile Wilderness, and in the winter, there’s a special way to get from one spot to the next: by cross-country skiing! Any combination of travel between the different lodges is well worth the trip, whether you start north-to-south or south-to-north. Let AMC help you reserve a shuttle for your car and your luggage, so you can focus on the journey. Learn how to plan your route, including the sauna you’ll find at the end of every day.
