This bon voyage decor is perfect for a simple going away party- both modern and playful while still being affordable and easy to recreate!
Years ago, one of my friends signed up for a semester abroad and flew across the world away from me and our friend group… we were of course happy for her but also sad so before she left we threw her a little going away party. To keep it simple, we brought snacks and drinks and I made this little ‘goodbye balloon’ wall. This is such a simple going away party decor idea and it cost only a few dollars total.
This is a dollar store DIY I have shared in my dollar store party ideas YouTube video… but I never blogged it! It really is a quick win, playful and modern looking. Let’s get down to it!
When I’m decorating for parties of any kind, I like to focus my attention on one wall, table or area of the home. I find by focusing in one space, I can make a bigger impact with less effort and less money. For this easy going away party, that meant our dining room.
I used just regular poster board papers for this and a brush marker. When I remade them for my dollar store DIY video last year, I used dollar store poster board. Either work!
I started by drawing out balloon shapes and then lettered goodbye puns in each balloon.
You know the ones… funny farewells like ‘see you later alligator’, ‘see you soon you big baboon’, ‘in a while crocodile’ and ‘with a hug, ladybug’. I did do a little google search to find some more- you can see them all on the balloons in the photos.
I liked using a brush pen for this as it gave such a nice chunky line around the balloon exterior but provided variation in thickness for the lettering. My favourite brush pen is the Tombow Dual Brush Pen but you could totally use a crayola marker for this too.
I cut these out just using scissors leaving a chunky border around my balloon outline. I love the way this offset cut looks. It feels modern but still playful.
I taped these to my wall which is covered by a world map- if you don’t have a map, you could just tape them to the wall!
This map is from IKEA years ago but if you’d like something similar- this wall tapestry from Amazon is a great price for party decor (or even home decor!)
Lastly, to complete the look and add some more fun to the mix, we blew up black balloons and left them heaped on the table and floor.
I love the way this looks and it’s fun to kick them around or pass them around during the night (or for my kids the next morning!).
There you have it! The most simple but modern going away party decor tutorial.
