It’s that time of year again—the weather warms up, which means outdoor parties—and bug bites. Whether it’s mosquitoes, moths, or gnats that are causing you to pack up and take the party inside, bug lights could be the answer to your summer woes.
So what are bug lights, and how do they work? A bug light is a yellow light bulb, either incandescent or CFL, with a very warm color temperature that appears almost orange when lit. This warm, yellow color temperature is shifted so far to the ‘warm’ side of the color temperature spectrum that many kinds of insects have trouble detecting the light—taking advantage of the difference between human and insect eyes. With bug lights, you get the same security and comfort you love from your porch and deck lights without the dreaded cloud of bugs floating around your fixture.
But do they really work? Yes—and no. One thing to understand when it comes to bug lights is that bugs will still be able to see your light, but it will be much less attractive to them. So while you still may get a few stragglers buzzing around your light, the majority of their friends will likely go crash your neighbor’s party instead. Another point to understand: bug lights do not kill bugs, they simply attempt to keep them away from your fixtures.
So if you’re looking for a solution to your winged insect woes this summer, a few bug lights could be the answer.
