Venture Capitalists (the good ones) want to participate in your growth AND in your exit (the great ones). Make sure you understand what is their value added and find a way to leverage their "besides-money" contribution. To scale rapidly you need to show clearly how is the company going to tackle bottle necks: the main ones are people, suppliers, production, sales and service. In THAT order. You DON'T need money, you need to pay for the bridges to overcome the bottlenecks, and for that you use the money. Demonstrate clearly what you are going to use the capital for, and you will have better interactions.

Part of follow-on funding is about showing that A) things are going well OR B) you found something better to do with capital. If you can show existing investors either of these scenarios and they believe you, you can likely get follow-on funding. Also note, follow-on funding is good for other investors because it shows that people want to double down on you.

First of all what is the investor's investment thesis on scalability? My background is in foundational DevOps engineering, Big Data Engineering, and large scale software design in general. As a fundamentals-focused early-stage VC investor, I look first for the founders' ability to attract top talent. This is a where scalability comes from on the people side. Are you pitching to an investor who understands what it takes to grow a company or are you pitching to an investor who thinks they can follow an enterprise framework for M&A and magically get to an autonomous exit? Be sure to pitch to investors who align with your exit strategy. You should also familiarize yourself with product led growth (PLG). Past performance is no longer innovation.
