Last week, our very own Dan Kalafatas joined the Dartmouth Climate Alliance panel, “Green Bytes: Solving AI’s Sustainability Challenge,” to discuss the massive energy demands of artificial intelligence and the real-world challenges of meeting them. A big thank you to the Dartmouth Society of Engineers for hosting such a timely and engaging discussion. 🎥 Watch the full recording here: https://lnkd.in/eYnrgAk6 #AISustainability #EnergyTransition #CleanTech #ClimateTech
I was delighted to moderate a Dartmouth Climate Alliance panel last night in San Francisco addressing the energy impacts of AI, featuring alums Dan Kalafatas of 3Degrees Group, Inc., Kush Patel of Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc., and Sienna Rogers from Pacific Gas and Electric Company. Some key takeaways were: 💡 AI companies’ valuations aren’t reflecting the sustainability impacts of AI’s energy use or the inherent friction involved in providing the energy they want. 💡Utilities are working to serve this load without negatively impacting other customers through new tariffs like PG&E’s Rule 30. 💡Big tech companies’ climate commitments may not endure as electricity demand and the cost of both GHG-emitting and non-emitting resources rise. 💡Sustainability reporting requirements like those in Europe and other policies to support transparency and energy efficiency can be helpful in preventing a race to the bottom in terms of time to power. Thanks to the Dartmouth Society of Engineers and 3Degrees Group, Inc., we enjoyed a lovely reception afterwards with several younger alums and industry colleagues.
