AI technologies are rapidly advancing and beginning to shape decision-making across the criminal justice system. While these tools can make the system more efficient, fair, and effective, they can also cause significant harm if misused. The Council’s Task Force on Artificial Intelligence released a new report outlining five core principles to guide the responsible use of AI across law enforcement, courts, and corrections. AI systems must be: 🔹 Safe & Reliable 🔹 Confidential & Secure 🔹 Effective & Helpful 🔹 Fair & Just 🔹 Democratic & Accountable These principles provide a framework for policymakers, practitioners, and technologists to ensure AI can strengthen public safety, protect individual rights, and build public trust in the justice system. Has clemency become more about politics than justice? CCJ's Khalil A. Cumberbatch and Marc Levin write in Newsweek that the power of clemency, when used often, fairly and transparently, is an essential tool for a more balanced justice system: https://lnkd.in/gM8diCNy

Is the legal system serving our veterans well? The House Veterans Affairs Committee hosted a roundtable discussion exploring that question earlier this month, featuring David "Mac" MacEwen, director of the CCJ Veterans Justice Commission. 🗓️ Centering Justice webinar on 10/28 from 12-1 pm ET: A wave of state and local bail reforms have come under scrutiny in recent months amid rising concerns about crime and public safety. In August, President Trump signed an executive order threatening to suspend or terminate federal funding to jurisdictions that have “substantially eliminated” cash bail, and legislators in North Carolina quickly revised bail policy after a fatal stabbing on the Charlotte transit system. Bail reform seeks to advance the Constitutional presumption of innocence and reserve jail for people who jeopardize public safety. But have reforms contributed to crime? Join panelists Erin George, Spurgeon Kennedy, William Reynolds, and Don Stemen, and Khalil A. Cumberbatch and Marc Levin from the Council on Criminal Justice’s Centering Justice project, 10/28 at 12 pm ET for a webinar discussing the state of pretrial release policies in the United States and how to strike an appropriate balance between the twin goals of crime control and justice. Please read this USA TODAY review of federal crackdowns in Chicago, Memphis, Los Angeles, Portland, and Washington DC. Happy to have contributed to this well-investigated piece. "'Aggressive enforcement needs to be reserved for the most aggressive criminals,' said Thomas Abt, director of the Center for the Study and Practice of Violence Reduction. He added that broad, heavy-handed policing has 'limited benefits and a lot of collateral consequences.'" https://lnkd.in/eSim4b4D
