NASA’s Perseverance Rover featuring Compulab | C-LAB's COMEX-IE38, Completes First AI-Planned Drive on Mars. Compulab | C-LAB's off-the-shelf COM Express module is an integral part of the camera imaging system on board the rover and has been behind the images sent back to Earth since its launch in July 2020. NASA have now released the first images of Perseverance's first-ever drive on Mars, fully planned by artificial intelligence. The AI analysed information usually examined by human planners, such as captured images from orbiting satellites and terrain data from computer models. Using this information, the AI was able to map out a route for the rover to follow, avoiding any rocks, steep slopes or boulder fields. The featured annotated image shows the AI-planned (depicted in magenta) and actual (orange) routes the Perseverance rover took during its Dec. 10, 2025, drive at Jezero Crater.
