As Rick -- CARE's wonderful co-chair -- notes, Mandela "cared deeply about fostering young leaders, and the Colin Powell School, with almost 4,000 students, half of whom are immigrants, 70% of whom are first-generation college students, 80% of whom are students of color, is the place to do it."
Co-chair, @CARE. Former Under Secretary of State in the Obama Administration. Former editor of TIME. Political analyst at MSNBC.
A nice piece in Axios about the launch of the Nelson Mandela project for social change at CCNY, a collaboration between The Colin Powell School, the UN, and the Mandela Foundation. We need a new generation of leadership now more than ever.

If current trends continue, global gender equality won’t be achieved until the 22nd century. A girl born today could live her entire life and still not see a world where women and men are truly equal. 📉 Between 2019 and 2022, nearly 40% of countries - home to over 1 billion women and girls - stalled or even regressed in gender equality. This backslide impacts issues across the board, from education to healthcare, wages to leadership. Without urgent action, 74% of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will remain out of reach, and gender inequality could be worse by 2030 than it was in 2015. Equality can’t wait. Gender equality is essential to a sustainable, just, and peaceful world. Let’s keep pushing for a future that values and uplifts everyone.

Join us for an inspiring conversation with Michelle Nunn and Iris Mwanza, Zambian-American author, gender-equality advocate, and Deputy Director of the Women in Leadership team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Iris’s debut novel, The Lions' Den, explores the power of storytelling to drive change. We'll discuss her leadership journey, the challenges of gender equality, and how she balances her advocacy with writing.

Women in CARE’s savings groups are 40% more food secure, 75% more resilient, 15% more politically active, and 80% more likely to invest in their children’s education! This #WorldSavingsDay, we’re excited to share insights from our VSLA Annual Report on how Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs) are driving change beyond financial inclusion. By engaging governments, partnering with the private sector, integrating digital solutions, and pioneering the approach in emergency settings, CARE’s VSLAs are unlocking opportunities for 740 million unbanked women worldwide. Our CARE Impact Awards celebration of hope on Monday included an extraordinary testimonial from Hiba Tibi, who throughout much of the last year led CARE Palestine’s work in the West Bank and #Gaza with courage, empathy, and grace. Hiba shared firsthand what hope looks like, even when it’s the hardest thing to keep. With her permission, I am sharing her powerful words here:

#Lebanon is facing an escalating humanitarian crisis as Israeli airstrikes expand across the country, causing widespread devastation to civilians and critical infrastructure, including hospitals and health care workers. Nearly half of primary health posts and clinics in conflict affected areas are closed. Six hospitals are no longer operating and four are only partially functional.
