  • Georgina Monti describes the pain as “barbed wire in her hip.” After having a hip resurfacing surgery with an innovative ceramic implant, she’s now reclaiming her mobility. The 30 year old from the United Kingdom, who spent her time kitesurfing and freediving, knew it was time to seek care when she started struggling to do the things she’s most passionate about. “At first, I put it off as an old injury that was causing me trouble. I continued to power on until I physically couldn't stand on a surfboard anymore – something I’ve been able to do my whole life,” says Georgina, who would ultimately have a hip resurfacing surgery with a ceramic implant at Cleveland Clinic London – which is one of the first hospitals in the world to provide this alternative to metal-on-metal hip resurfacing. Georgina’s injury stemmed from a wakeboarding accident where she dislocated her hip. This happened when she was around 18 years old, and over time, things got worse. When the pain drove Georgina to get an MRI, it showed her femoral head had collapsed. She eventually came to Cleveland Clinic London to meet with Professor Justin Cobb. He was offering another option besides a total hip replacement: A hip resurfacing procedure using a ceramic implant. “While a great option, a total hip replacement is not the best approach for everyone. For instance, it can reduce the amount of exercise a patient can take. With hip resurfacing, patients retain the femoral head and neck, allowing them to resume the activities they participated in with their healthy, native hip,” says Prof Cobb. For years, the only available option was metal-on-metal hip resurfacing, which manufacturers currently recommend only for patients with larger femoral heads – typically found more often in men. In response, Prof Cobb and team created the ceramic hip resurfacing implant that's tailored to patients with smaller hips and pelvises. After getting this ceramic implant, Prof Cobb expects Georgina to be able to return to all her sports in the future. “I put off having a scan longer than I should have. Don’t be scared to take that step. There’s so much they can do now for hip preservation, and it turned out to be the best possible thing I could have done,” says Georgina.

  • Cleveland Clinic London surgeons have begun performing hip resurfacing with ceramic implants, becoming among the first in the world to offer this alternative to the traditional metal-on-metal procedure. The H1 ceramic implant, developed at Imperial College London by Cleveland Clinic London surgeon Prof Justin Cobb, was approved by the UK’s MHRA in 2025. Unlike metal-on-metal implants, which were suitable only for patients with larger bones, the H1 ceramic implant is designed to make hip resurfacing possible for patients with smaller hips and pelvises. "This innovation means more patients can benefit from hip resurfacing, preserving their bone and restoring near-natural movement," say Prof Cobb. Clinical studies have shown that patients receiving the H1 implant achieved biomechanics similar to those with healthy hips - a result not seen with traditional total hip replacements. The H1 implant is currently available in the UK under compassionate use, with a broader European rollout planned for 2026. • Last month, Chad Redgrave MSC (Cardioresp), BSC, MCSP, ICU Clinical Lead Physiotherapist, represented Cleveland Clinic London at the 17th World Congress of Intensive and Critical Care in Vancouver, presenting an abstract and poster showcasing our innovative approach to tracheostomy care. His presentation, 'Optimal Multidisciplinary Tracheostomy Care: Establishing a Safe and Effective Service in a Brand-New Hospital', showcased how our teams have built a model of care that prioritises safety, quality and collaboration from day one. Reflecting on the experience, Chad said: “It was a fantastic opportunity to showcase the work of Cleveland Clinic London and our ongoing dedication to quality, safety and teamwork. It was wonderful to see so much international interest in what we’re achieving here. This was only possible thanks to the support of the Cleveland Clinic London tracheostomy multidisciplinary team, my line manager Bini Suresh, Milena Kachar and Dr Georg Auzinger. I also had amazing data analysis support from Rachel Kidd in nursing.” Many thanks to Cleveland Clinic Philanthropy UK for their support in making this possible. #ClevelandClinicLondon #Physiotherapy #CriticalCare
