Get an inside look at our Connecticut River Bridge Project, which has made significant progress since breaking ground just over a year ago and remains on schedule and budget. The modern bridge replacement now under construction between Old Saybrook and Old Lyme, CT, will improve reliability, boost top speeds by 55%, and deliver smoother, safer travel along the Northeast Corridor when it opens by 2031. This project will not only directly benefit rail travelers; it’s also driving economic development in several locations across the United States, where many components are being fabricated before shipping to the project site. For example, the bascule truss span and heel girder are being fabricated in South Gibsonton, FL; trunnion towers in Russellville, AL; and approach span steel in Williamsport, PA. None of this would be possible without the strong support of Amtrak’s funding partners at the Federal Railroad Administration and Connecticut Department of Transportation, as well as O&G Industries, Inc./Tutor Perini Corporation (construction joint venture), AECOM (construction management contractor), and many others.

Next stop: the East Coast.   The first new Amtrak Cascades trainset is officially headed to the Northeast Corridor for additional testing—marking a major milestone on the path to launching new trains on the Amtrak Cascades corridor in 2026.   This trainset is part of our bold transformation in passenger rail. Known within the industry as part of Amtrak’s Airo fleet, a total of 83 new trainsets will roll out across the country, starting with Amtrak Cascades, followed by the Northeast Regional, and other key routes.   With Pacific Northwest-inspired design, modern amenities, and regional food and beverage offerings, we're redefining the journey—one route at a time.

This month, Amtrak President Roger Harris met with members of the NCTCOG Transportation and the Regional Transportation Council to express our deep appreciation for their continued support of passenger rail in the region.   We were proud to present the “Amtrak Champion” award in recognition of NCTCOG’s leadership in securing $3.6 million to sustain the Heartland Flyer. We also honored Michael Morris, Director of Transportation at NCTCOG, for his tireless advocacy for mobility and connectivity across Texas and Oklahoma.   This partnership exemplifies what’s possible when we work together toward a shared vision. Special thanks to the Texas Department of Transportation and Oklahoma Department of Transportation for their collaboration and commitment to strengthening passenger rail across the region. We look forward to continuing our collaboration to ensure long-term support for the Heartland Flyer as we strengthen passenger rail across the region.

Gulf Coast showing us how it’s done!

Amtrak Mardi Gras Service is off to a strong start, showing the demand and excitement for passenger rail along the Gulf Coast! 🚆 Since launching in August, nearly 19,000 riders have boarded — selling out trains for the first THREE Saints home games and major events like Cruisin’ the Coast. To meet demand, Amtrak has added an extra car on Saints weekends, expanding capacity by 60 seats per trip. Riders can also take advantage of Amtrak’s 3-3-3 promotion, earning triple Amtrak Guest Rewards points after their first three trips through Nov. 18. With ridership high and communities engaged, the service is already reducing traffic, boosting local economies, and proving to be a win for regional connectivity and access.
