About us
The American Council of the Blind is a national membership organization formed by people who are blind to promote the independence, dignity and advancement of people with blindness and visual impairment. Members are blind, visually impaired or fully sighted people, from all walks of life, and ranging in age from teens to seniors. ACB encourages people with vision impairment to live and work independently, to make significant contributions within their communities, and to advocate for themselves. ACB governmental affairs staff constantly monitors laws and regulations crucial to the lives of people who are blind. Issues which receive ACB’s attention include civil rights, education, employment, Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, guide dog access, pedestrian safety, travel and recreation, expanded public transportation, adaptive technology, braille literacy and more. When appropriate, ACB works in coalition with other disability groups worldwide to create a range of effective programs for people who are visually impaired.

Join ACB in asking Congress to pass the Disability Access to Transportation Act! People with disabilities deserve accessible, flexible, and modern paratransit services. Too often, riders face long waits between trips, outdated scheduling systems, and limited options for quick stops along the way. The Disability Access to Transportation Act would: ✅ Launch a pilot program allowing quick stops (like the pharmacy) during trips ✅ Prioritize real-time tracking and on-demand scheduling technology ✅ Streamline the complaint process and collect service data to close gaps This bipartisan bill will make transportation more equitable and independent for millions. ACB’s Director of Advocacy and Governmental Affairs Claire Stanley provides a description of this bill on our YouTube page: https://lnkd.in/ehSDvEUs Take action by sending a message to your representative at https://lnkd.in/exdBhcAc

Join ACB in urging Congress to co-sponsor the Disaster Relief Medicaid Act (DRMA)! When disaster strikes, Medicaid recipients often face dangerous gaps in coverage after being displaced from their homes. DRMA ensures they won’t lose access to critical care simply because they’ve crossed a county or state line. This bill, introduced by Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) and Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), provides uninterrupted access to Medicaid services for disaster survivors, which would protect lives and ensure continuity of care when it’s needed most. ACB Director of Advocacy and Governmental Affairs Claire Stanley, J.D. provides a description of this bill on our YouTube page: https://lnkd.in/eEp4T-sX Click here to send a message to your representative: https://lnkd.in/eTA-pVih

On this day in 1965, the Voting Rights Act was signed into law, establishing critical protections for voters with disabilities, including the right to receive help from a person of their choosing at the polls. This landmark law also outlawed discriminatory voting practices for all citizens. ACB continues to advocate for accessible voting at every stage of the process, from in-person voting to remote options. Our efforts build on the foundation laid by the Voting Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the Help America Vote Act, to ensure that people who are blind or have low vision can fully participate in our democracy.
