Students, parents and educators have come to schools with concerns over potentially harmful social media content, including content that may involve/target other students. This type of content can be extremely hurtful and disruptive to learning. Last year, the ISTE+ASCD team reached out to Meta to share concerns we heard from educators across the country. We emphasized the need to give school leaders more control over social media content related to their school communities. Over the past six months, we collaborated with Meta to connect a group of schools to participate in a pilot program to give school leaders a more direct role in managing content related to their communities. During the pilot, reports from school partners were prioritized for review, and schools in the program received status updates and real-time notifications when action had been taken on a report. Now, Instagram is introducing a new initiative that empowers enrolled schools to quickly report and resolve these instances of harmful content. All US middle and high schools can now sign up to participate. Middle and high schools in the US can sign up for the School Partnership Program waitlist by visiting Instagram settings, then selecting ‘Account type and tools’ or ‘Business tools and controls. Schools can visit https://hubs.li/Q03dHxYH0 to learn more and sign up for the waitlist. Link: https://hubs.li/Q03dHN6C0

Annie J. Easley’s journey into space science began with a newspaper article—and led to a groundbreaking 34-year career at NACA (later NASA). As a mathematician in the Launch Vehicles Division, she developed coding for alternative energy experiments, paving the way for solar and wind technologies. Despite facing discrimination—such as being denied tuition reimbursement that her male colleagues received—Easley remained focused, saying: "I'm out here to do a job, and I knew I had the ability to do it." Fast forward to today, Daniela Rus is pushing the boundaries of robotics as the first female director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab. From robots that fly and swim to self-assembling machines, her work sounds like science fiction—but it’s shaping the future of technology. As we near the end of Women's History Month, let’s celebrate the fearless women who have transformed STEM and continue to inspire innovation! 💡 #WomenInSTEM #SpaceScience #FutureOfTech #WHM

I’ve seen how distracting social media can become when it is used to share content that isn’t aligned with school values. It is particularly hard to create a healthy digital school culture when school leaders have no control over removing inappropriate content, such as confession accounts, fight accounts or impersonation accounts. But this is also a personal issue for me. This year, my son was targeted on a confession account. I reported the account in the social media app, but it was not removed. Our principal also reported the account, as did many other students. No response. Prompted by the frustration of my son’s experience, I began reaching out to schools in our network to see if they were experiencing similar frustrations. The response was overwhelming. School leaders felt helpless when attempting to have inappropriate accounts removed. Last year, my team reached out to Meta to share the concerns we’d been hearing. We shared that it was critical to give school leaders more control over the social media content in their schools. Over the past six months, we worked with a group of schools in our network to test a version of Instagram that allowed school leaders to identify and report inappropriate or disruptive posts immediately. Instagram has decided to expand the program to all middle and high schools in the US. This program allows school leaders to use social media to communicate with their school community while providing more control over potentially harmful content.
