I had a strange phone call on Thursday that I wanted to share with folks. I am a confirmed sponsor for AtlSecCon in 2026, which I'm quite happy an excited for. I've heard great things, so finally being able to go out East to be part of the security scene there should be amazing. On Wednesday, we (the sponsors) received word on some resources for us, including hotels. So I was somewhat caught off guard when "Eric" called me on Thursday morning asking to speak to the event person for AtlSecCon. I answered that I can speak with him, and he went into a chat about helping organize the hotel stay, asking what days I wanted to book. Red flags, there was no mention from the organizers about anyone assisting with hotels. In fact, we had a code we could use with their hotel of choice, which I knew and tried the same day. I just need to figure out flights to get dates. But Eric was persistent, saying that most vendors are booking for the day before and checking out the last day of the conference. I said I still needed to check flights (true, but I also knew that there were no flights on Saturday to my airport of choice, so I'd have to stay longer). Eric asked if I could check now, but I said no, I have other work to do and this isn't a priority. He then asked what time he could call me back to finish the call, and I asked why? He said to help finalize the booking, at which point I asked why would I book with him when I can do so by myself with the discount code provided to me by the organizers. That's when he said, okay fine, I'll note that and he ended the call. Doing some searches afterwards led me down an interesting path. Apparently "Eric" calls people about a variety of conferences, always pushing to book hotel reservations. He had a French-Canadian accent, but his company and phone number were from North Carolina! And his company seems to be a travel agency specializing in hotel bookings. While he didn't say that he represented the conference organizers, he sure as hell implied it. Illegal? No, but scummy as anything. I have warned the organizers about this, and they did confirm they are not working with anyone and recommended booking directly with the hotel, which I was going to do regardless. I suspect they found my logo on the list of sponsors for the conference and called right away. It was less than 24 hours when we had our logo posted, so they were clearly stalking the vendor pages. Just be aware if you are a sponsor at a conference and may be a smaller business. This guy was smooth and fast talking, so I can see people getting caught off guard and working with him. I can't confirm that they bookings are legitimate or not, but I have a strong suspicion that the rates wouldn't be that great. Not all scams are asking for gift card or installing software to uninstall some viruses on your computer. Be diligent, which is a great lesson on this last day of #CyberSecurityAwarenessMonth.
