Updates

  • From 2 November, customers in south Auckland will benefit from new and improved bus routes, offering better connections to Middlemore Hospital, train stations, and the airport industrial area!   At dawn this morning, we celebrated the opening of two purpose-built Ritchies Transport depots in Māngere - located on Oruarangi Road and Ascot Road - marking a major step toward a cleaner, smarter, and safer bus network.   These facilities are part of a nine-year, $1.068 billion contract awarded to Ritchies earlier this year, supporting expanded services across south and west Auckland. The Māngere depots will support over 250 drivers and operations staff and introduce 102 electric buses to the fleet.   The Oruarangi Road depot is fully electrified with smart-charging tech, while Ascot Road will transition to electric in 2026. These upgrades support AT’s Mission Electric programme and our commitment to delivering cleaner, quieter, and safer journeys for Aucklanders.   Not only are the depots purpose built, but the buses are equipped with top of the line safety measures, including: 🚍 Collision-avoidance radar 🚍 Lane-departure and pedestrian-detection alerts 🚍 AI-driven driver monitoring to detect fatigue or distraction 🚍 Protective driver screens and multi-camera surveillance systems

  • It's not often you see trains, on the back of a truck, coming off a boat. But these are our brand-new 3-car electric trains which landed at the Port of Auckland Port of Auckland today, after being shipped all the way from Mexico. Inside the carpets are still covered with cardboard and the seats in plastic – before hands and feet inevitably make their mark. The new trains are built ready for underground City Rail Link operations, and for customers they have an extra mod-con you won’t see on our older units - USB charging points you can use to power up your devices. With the City Rail Link opening in 2026, we’re adding 23 new trains to our fleet bringing it to 95 – that means we can provide more services, more often, getting people to the places they want to go, quicker. And we can move more people in total with the extra capacity. More trains arriving now also means more flexibility for fleet upgrades. Our existing fleet is nearing a decade on the tracks and need upgrading before CRL opens. Having new trains now allows us to take some out of service for modifying, with minimal disruption. They’ll be refitted with a few new things including LED lights, drag detecting door sensors and passenger emergency alarms. Yes, the City Rail Link is a game-changer and will completely transform Auckland’s entire rail network, but without these extra trains to run on it – we wouldn’t be able to offer more services and faster journeys. We’re expecting the final batch of trains early next year.

  • We're transforming the area around Karanga-a-Hape Station into a vibrant, welcoming transport hub that connects buses and trains from all over Auckland. We know that when the CRL opens next year there'll be lots more people travelling to and through the area so we're making sure it's ready to go. Beresford Square has already re-opened after a bit of a glow-up and we're making great progress on our other improvements too. 🚌Better bus connections to keep you moving with ease 🚸Wider footpaths 🚘Fresh road surfaces 🚴♂️New cycle lanes 🚶♀️Pedestrian crossings 🌴Greener touches - check out the new Nikau Palms on Pitt Street! We've completed a lot of the work already and the rest should be finished before the end of the year - we can't wait to show you more.

  • East Auckland's new flyover, known locally as Reeves Road flyover was delivered 5 months early and under budget, thanks to smart tech, clever engineering and great teamwork. 🚧 Cranes lifted and shifted temporary bridge supports, cutting build time from 8-10 days to just 2-3 per span. 📡 Wireless concrete sensors tracked strength in real time, saving a full month by showing our teams when the concrete was ready. 🤝 Early collaboration and repeatable designs helped the team work at pace

  • Chris Dirks might call himself a train nerd, but he's also a self-taught programmer and now a fully-fledged tech entrepreneur. He's created a live LED map of Auckland’s rail network — featuring 150 glowing LEDs that track real-time train positions using open source data from Auckland Transport. He's even included the new City Rail Link tunnels and stations (opening next year) - but for obvious reasons, they are not lit up just yet! But it does pick up City Rail Link test trains diving in and out of the tunnels! The circuit board offers a front-row seat to the pulse of our rail system, running in both timetable mode and at 1000x speed to showcase just how busy things get — and how much busier they’ll be when the CRL opens next year. Hardly surprising from the son of a physicist and electrical engineer - but Chris says after spending upwards of 200 hours on this creation, he "has to be a little bit insane". 💡 And yes, you can get a circuit board yourself, and yes, they’re selling like hotcakes. Disclaimer: We didn’t ask Chris to build this. And we definitely didn’t ask him to call us cool. But we’ll take it! Chris Dirks #AucklandRailNetwork KiwiRail City Rail Link Ltd Auckland One Rail

  • About 16,000 East Auckland drivers a day enjoying easier journeys on the Eastern Busway's new Pakūranga flyover are set for even better commutes with traffic lanes about to open in both directions. Rā Hihi - the flyover, also known as the Reeves Road flyover, has been open to citybound lanes since the start of October. Traffic heading towards Howick is now able to use the flyover connecting South Eastern Highway to Pakūranga Road.

  • Claris Airport just landed a major national win! ✈️   The Great Barrier Aerodrome, also known as Claris Airport, has won Commercial Initiative of the Year (Small Airport) at the New Zealand Airport Awards for its Qualifying Aerodrome Certification.   The small but mighty non-towered aerodrome is a vital transport connection for the Island’s community. The certification improves safety, resilience, and long-term planning, while paving the way for future funding and investment in hangar facilities, expanded passenger services and scenic flights.   Auckland Transport manages and operates the airport on behalf of Auckland Council, overseeing all airside operations, including terminals and carparks. This recognition from the NZ Airports Association is a proud moment for our teams, and we’re excited about what the certification means for the future of Great Barrier Island.   Huge congratulations to the Claris Airport team, especially Richard La Ville for 18 years of dedicated service, and John Strawbridge - MInstD for the awesome mahi 👏

  • Beresford Square Bursts back to Life It was very special to see this much-loved square return to public use today with the completion of most of CRL's above ground construction works. The new and improved Beresford Square provides the community with a totally rebuilt public space to gather above a new world-class underground train system below. This community square in the heart of Auckland city has always been part of Auckland's transport story – and this is set to continue with the new Karanga-a-Hape Station entrance at its heart. But it's not all about the trains. We've been busy upgrading the surrounding streets, with new cycleways, smoother roads, better bus connections and more greenery. The bulk of these upgrades have now been completed, with some additional features to be added before Karanga-a-Hape Station opens in 2026. When CRL trains are running next year, double the number of Aucklanders will live within 30 minutes of the Karangahape neighbourhood, making enjoying the area’s shopping, restaurants, bars, and clubs even easier. We're working alongside Auckland Council and the local community on plans to support events and activations in the area, as we re-establish Beresford Square as a safe and vibrant place to gather. Starting with the Karangahape Business Association's 'FAM' event on October 4: http://spr.ly/6046Acfg4 We're so proud that Auckland is becoming a truly connected city, and the opening of Beresford Square is just the latest step towards a transport-friendly and transformed city centre – enabled by the City Rail Link Ltd Link project
