As part of this year’s Avenue Giving initiative, we held 20 Days of Giveaways, including four grand prizes of rental credits. The first of these deserving winners is Hassan Y., who was awarded one month of free rent! Hassan joined our community in April 2024, arriving from Lagos, Nigeria, to a new culture, climate and country. As Hassan shared, "In those early, uncertain days, I made a choice—to not only adapt, but also to help others feel at home, just as I wished for myself." From hosting small gatherings where neighbours connect over stories and meals to offering a helping hand with groceries or simply sharing a friendly conversation in the hallway, Hassan embodies the spirit of community. He believes it’s the “small actions that add up to make this place feel like home.” Hassan’s story highlights the power of kindness and connection. Our Saskatoon team recently spent time with the amazing seniors at Oliver Lodge, creating 125 personalized cards and adorable tin-can snowmen! Using their Employer Supported Volunteerism hours, they brought smiles and joy to the members of Oliver Lodge’s recreational therapy program. Meet Douglas K., who joined Avenue Living Communities as a maintenance associate in January 2022 and has since become an essential part of our team. Known for his genuine care and willingness to help, Douglas consistently goes out of his way to make a positive impact. His dedication to both residents and teammates makes him an invaluable member of our team and he’s always ready to lend a hand wherever it’s needed. He is especially supportive of new residents, including those new to Canada, offering guidance on how to use appliances and helping them settle in. “I’ve helped people figure out how to use the dishwasher, washer, or stove,” Doug says. “I also make sure to listen to what they have to say.” His thoughtful approach makes residents feel at ease and comfortable reaching out for help. In addition to his strong support for residents, Douglas plays an active role in ensuring safety as co-lead of our Joint Health and Safety Committee. He monitors high-traffic areas and addresses any issues quickly. Through his efforts, Douglas exemplifies Avenue Living Communities’ values of service, reliability, and care, setting a high standard for everyone.
