When you think of mining, what do you think of? ⛏️ Maybe you think of diamonds, or possibly deep caves with workers chipping away at the rock. Okay, so maybe we’ve come a lot further that that over the decades. But one thing we should really be thinking about is waste. Mining accounts for approximately 13 billion tonnes of tailing waste annually. And that is only getting worse, with 2 trillion (yes, trillion) tonnes of waste forecasted to pollute our land by 2050. This got me thinking. What is being done about this? It’s so clear that mining is here to stay, and to be honest, are we really ready to hand over our mobile phones just yet? On a more serious note, what about our electric cars? They need mining. It does sound counterproductive to build a sustainable car with mined materials, but we’re probably best using our time to find ways to reduce, or maybe (wishful thinking) eliminate, mining’s impact on our environment, so we can keep getting closer to the eventual phase-out of petrol cars. One company, TOMRA, is doing just that. They’ve developed cutting-edge sensor-based ore sorting technology that: - Separates valuable ore from waste rock at the earliest stage of extraction - Eliminates barren rock, meaning less material enters the tailings facility - Significantly reduces the volume requiring energy-intensive processing, water-heavy milling, and chemical treatment — driving smarter operations and a smaller environmental footprint. - Removes acid-forming particles from waste rock, turning it into clean, stable, and saleable aggregate for construction or onsite infrastructure These small achievements in mining are part of a much bigger picture, and they are just a small part of AZoMining’s wider recognition of fascinating ways that companies and researchers are reducing the harm that mining undoubtedly causes. It reminds me every day that there is hope for the world, even in the places you least expect it.

  • Webinar Tomorrow — Beyond Rock Characterization: Deep Learning in Mineral Classification 🔍 Join ZEISS Microscopy for an illuminating session with Rich Taylor, where we dive into the how and why of Deep Learning Neural Networks (DLNN) for rock and mineral characterization. Rocks are complex. Traditional analytical systems often require bespoke approaches to texture, chemistry, and scale. In this webinar, Rich will explore: 🔹 The latest generation of mineral characterization techniques 🔹 Mineral classification via light, electron, and X‑ray microscopy 🔹 How to leverage quantitative data to build robust datasets 🔹 How neural networks can streamline and enhance data processing 🔹 Techniques for connecting datasets across microscopy platforms Whether you’re a geoscientist, microscopist, or materials researcher, this is your opportunity to see how DLNN is reshaping our understanding of minerals — and how you can adopt these tools in your own work. 👉 Book your place now https://lnkd.in/eKXHTzzs Please share with colleagues who’d benefit — and we look forward to seeing you there. #Geoscience #Microscopy #DeepLearning #MineralClassification #ZEISS #Webinar #DataScience

  • 🖥️ Join the webinar: Fixing team silos: Making remote sensing work across your global mining operations. In mining, remote sensing delivers invaluable insights—yet data silos drain its potential. Fragmented contracts, isolated teams, and scattered imagery sap budgets and slow exploration, monitoring, and ESG compliance. UP42 solves the data disconnect. Their marketplace unifies industry-leading providers—Maxar, Airbus, Planet, and more—into one intuitive platform. Discover, task, and stream archive or fresh imagery in minutes, automate recurring orders, and slash administrative overhead. Procurement teams regain bargaining power through consolidated agreements; geologists and engineers access a single hub for multi-use imagery, analytics, and API integrations; leadership gains a transparent, cost-efficient data pipeline across every region and business unit. Whether you’re scouting greenfield targets, tracking pit expansion, or auditing rehabilitation, UP42 keeps your entire operation working from the same high-resolution view—no more bottlenecks, no more platform hopping. Turn remote sensing into a strategic asset, not a drain on time and money. Explore what unified data can do for your mine. #Remotesensing #mining
