Investing in and mentoring Silicon Valley's best Seed stage startups since 1994
About us
The Band of Angels is Silicon Valley's oldest seed funding organization. We are a formal group of more than 150 former and current high tech executives who are interested in investing their time and money into new, cutting edge, startup companies. We've seeded over 277 companies in our history with 61 profitable M&A exits and 11 IPOs. Band members have founded companies such as Symantec, Logitech, and National Semiconductor and been senior executives at the likes of Sun Microsystems, Hewlett Packard, and Intuit. The Band meets monthly to formally consider three startups selected from among the more than 50 that are screened each month by the Band Deal Selection Process. Entrepreneurs can expect a thorough examination and, occasionally, an investment from some of Silicon Valley's most accomplished entrepreneurs.

The Band of Angels is thrilled to announce our investment in Sharper Sense! They are developing single-use neurostimulation patches that enhance cognition and perception. This innovative technology is backed by a decade of research (supported by DARPA, NIH, NSF) and exclusive patents from Columbia and Cornell. For initial customers in defense and sports, Sharper Sense provides "clarity when it counts" by focusing mental state and sensory acuity to improve performance and reduce injury. Congratulations to the entire Sharper Sense team! Charles Rodenkirch, PhD Paul Quadros #AngelInvesting #Startups

The Band of Angels is pleased to share its recent investment in BMI OrganBank, an innovative company developing next-generation solutions for organ and tissue transplantation, with an initial focus on kidneys. Each year in the U.S., more than 125,000 patients require kidney transplants, yet only about 25,000 procedures are performed due to a shortage of viable organs. Highlighting its industry impact, BMI OrganBank was recently recognized by the National Kidney Foundation through a strategic investment. Congrats to the entire BMI OrganBank team on your continued success! #AngelInvesting Carrie DiMarzio Robert Neusner Tom Carroux Michael Maszy

The Band of Angels members enjoyed another insightful session on Qualified Small Business Stock (QSBS), where Brian Gormley, CFA, CFP®, First VP at The Bankhead Group of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, discussed key updates introduced in July 2025. The new laws are designed to enhance investor benefits by increasing tax exclusion limits and broadening eligibility criteria for qualifying businesses. These changes aim to make QSBS more attractive, especially for those investing in early-stage startups. Thank you, Brian, for sharing your insights! #AngelInvesting

Another unforgettable Band of Angels summer party in the books! A big thank you to Band Member Richard Pivnicka and his lovely wife Barbara Pivnicka for graciously opening up their beautiful home to host an evening filled with uplifting conversations, laughter, and truly delicious food and wine. It was a joy to see so many of our Members come together - reconnecting, building new bonds, and celebrating the spirit of this extraordinary community. These moments remind us of what makes the Band so special. Grateful for the energy, warmth, and camaraderie that made the night so memorable. Until next year! Big thank you to former Band of Angels member Patrick Guerra for sharing his decades long experience on Smart Angel Investing and how we can successfully navigate the pitfalls. He offered an analytical approach to early-stage investing, guiding angels through the key stages of the investment lifecycle: screening, due diligence, deal structuring, post-investment engagement ("the marriage"), and realizing returns. A must for anyone serious about angel investing. #AngelInvesting #StartupSuccess

Welcome to the Band of Angels portfolio, BMI OrganBank! We're thrilled to have you on board and to see strong syndication across angel groups!
The Band of Angels invested in BMI OrganBank who has invented a system for organ preservation and transportation. 125,000 Americans need kidney transplants each year, but only 25,000 kidney transplant operations are performed. Almost 90% of donated kidneys with transplant potential go unused due to uncertain viability. BMI OrganBank provides surgeons with data to evaluate whether to transplant or discard a kidney. BMI OrganBank also increases the viability of kidneys from hours to days, in other words, increases supply to a market with proven demand. People who need a new kidney are typically on dialysis. Each kidney transplant pays for itself in two years, saving $517,000 per patient over ten years (compared to continuing dialysis treatment). BMI OrganBank’s device and perfusion solution is expected to have full pass-through Medicare reimbursement. Note that BMI OrganBank is not limited to kidneys: usage with a variety of organs offers the possibility of long-term revenue growth and improved health outcomes. The Funding Round is still open. If you’d like to learn more about BMI OrganBank, please contact me, Carrie DiMarzio or Robert Neusner. Thank you Luke Sandler of Columbia Angel Network for introducing BMI OrganBank.
