Confession: first time I interview a footballer! And of course it was going to be an England icon Rio Ferdinand It was great to host Rio for our inaugural subscriber event in Bloomberg Dubai. (Any subscriber was welcome!). Our first fireside chat was with him alongside host of The Deal Jason Kelly talking about the growth of sports in the region. Our second panel was everyone’s favourite subject: the outlook for Dubai real estate with our star reporters Zainab Fattah Nicolas Parasie (spoiler: no signs of things slowing down). For those who were not aware, Rio re-located to Dubai a few months ago with his family. “Family is at the heart of all my decisions. So again, this is an adventure.” We also sat down for a tv interview where he told me that the way younger audiences consume football is reshaping the industry and that companies need to adapt fast. Last year his company Ferdinand Group bought a stake in one of the Middle East’s first Arabic-language digital football apps Koora Break in Saudi Arabia. He said the sport’s next phase of growth will depend on how effectively content reaches consumers.
