About us
Brave is on a mission to build a user-first Web. Starting with our flagship browser and search engine, Brave shields users from the creepy ads and trackers that follow you across the web. Our browser has more than 100 million users and our search engine delivers over 1.6 billion queries per month. But we’re also changing the Web’s money model with a privacy-first digital ads platform that gives advertisers access to unreachable audiences; users earn crypto rewards for their attention; and creators unlock new revenue streams. Founded in 2015 by Brendan Eich, creator of JavaScript and co-founder of Mozilla (Firefox), and Brian Bondy, formerly of Khan Academy and Mozilla. Discover our products: Brave Browser: Fast, private browsing that blocks third-party ads and trackers by default. Brave Search: The world’s largest private search index, and the fastest growing independent search engine since Bing. Brave Ads: Unique cookie-less advertising in discreet ad units built right into the browser and search engine. Want to help build a better Web? Consider working with us!

Can online services preserve users' privacy while verifying their age? A proposed solution, called zero-knowledge proofs, has potential but also has limits. With zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs), the user can prove they meet verification requirements without sharing personal information. For example, a user can show that they're above 21 without revealing their exact birthdate or other details. However, zero-knowledge proof systems have several issues that prevent it from fully protecting users' privacy including: - Possible information leaks - Centralization of authority - Exclusion of people without digital IDs Today's blog post by our research team explains the limits of ZKPs and how we can overcome them. Thank you to our users for working so hard to let friends and family know about us. It's helping us continue to reach new growth milestones. 📈 The Brave browser reached 101.69 million monthly active users in October. The fastest growing platform is Linux, which now has over 1 million monthly active users. Brave Search's usage, meanwhile, has grown to over 1.73 billion queries per month. Nearly 10% of those queries are coming from people who don't use our browser.

Another performance boost is coming to Brave! 🦁 We’ve completed the next stage of improving the memory usage of the browser’s native adblock engine. The cosmetic filters in our ad blocker have been moved to flatbuffers, a more compact and efficient type of storage. This under-the-hood change saves ~12 MB of memory on all platforms by default (Android, iOS and desktop), and even more when additional lists are enabled! By blocking unwanted ads and trackers, Brave already reduces how much memory sites use. This performance work ensures that these built-in protections are as lightweight as possible, too. These changes are live in Brave Beta on all platforms now and will come to the release build by December.
