BSA was glad to have the Ministry of Digital Development and Information’s Deputy Secretary (Digital Economy and International), Hong Yuen Poon, and our own SVP of Global Policy, Aaron Cooper, leading a Roundtable with the theme: “Shaping the Digital Future: The Impact of Global Geopolitical Shifts on Tech Policies in the Asia-Pacific Region.” We had a great conversation on how policies related to #AI, #cybersecurity, and other emerging technologies develop in Singapore, the APAC region, and further afield in the US. We also discussed the opportunities and challenges for interoperability and its domestic, regional, and international impact. Thank you for the lively exchange and insights shared. 🙏 Special thanks to Cloudflare for hosting us at your beautiful office! 📝 How can Australia improve privacy protections to better protect consumers, empower Australian businesses’ competitiveness, and align its privacy rules with principles embraced by other leading economies internationally? Check out Jared Ragland's most recent piece in InnovationAus.com on the controller processor distinction in anticipation of Australia's current plans to reform its #privacy law. Read more below.
I'm very happy to share my OpEd in InnovationAus.com urging the government to adopt the #controllerprocessordistinction as part of Australia's current plans to reform its Privacy Law. Making clear the distinct roles and responsibilities of #controllers, companies that decide whether and how to collect personal data from consumers, and that therefore have consumer-facing obligations like securing consent and responding to consumer requests like accessing, correcting, or deleting their personal data, and #processors, companies that are responsible for securely processing that data under direction from controllers, will assist policymakers and regulators, consumers, and businesses in Australia and better align Australia's privacy law with those of other major jurisdictions.
