On-call. Saturday. The consumer service wouldn't scale. The right file was open, the config changes were in, nothing was taking effect. Seer found it: a separate autoscaler was silently overriding everything. The setting that changes how the whole consumer behaves was buried in a completely different config file, with zero indication it existed from the file being edited.
