The IAC serves as a strategic adviser to the GIFCT Operating Board by providing ongoing advisory and producing an annual report that identifies organizational priorities and evaluates previous GIFCT performance. The Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) is pleased to welcome Jonathan Russell as the new Chair of the Independent Advisory Committee (IAC). The IAC, which provides strategic, substantive advice in support of GIFCT’s mission to prevent terrorists and violent extremists from exploiting digital platforms, held its first meeting under Russell's leadership earlier this month. We look forward to continued collaboration and engagement with the IAC and we are pleased to welcome new IAC members, whose expertise and perspectives will further enrich the committee’s role in guiding GIFCT’s mission. Representing GIFCT, Executive Director Naureen Chowdhury Fink, Director of Trust and Safety Solutions Skip G., and Membership & Programs Senior Lead Nagham El Karhili, Ph.D., shared insights on the evolution of our Incident Response Framework and how multi-stakeholder collaboration is crucial to addressing the consequences of violent extremism online. Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism (GIFCT) was honored to join Heads of State, senior officials, and practitioners in Rome, Italy, for a meeting of the Aqaba Process and to deepen understanding of regional trends and dynamics in West Africa. GIFCT Senior Director Erin Saltman, PhD gave a briefing on the emerging trends in the online terrorist landscape - including the evolving use of platforms and technology for radicalization and recruitment - alongside opportunities for collaboration with West African governments to leverage and contribute to GIFCT’s ongoing efforts. The Aqaba Process Summit in Rome, co-chaired by His Majesty King Abdullah II of Jordan and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, focused on West Africa and combatting the instability and threats of terrorism and violent extremism facing the region. Initiated by His Majesty in 2015, the Aqaba Process fosters coordination, security and military cooperation, and the exchange of expertise among regional and international partners to combat these threats.
