In a new series on innovations in sexual and reproductive health in The Lancet Group, two papers co-authored by Guttmacher researchers showcase how advancing contraceptive choice and sustaining funding for sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) saves lives, promotes equity, and strengthens health systems. After the Affordable Care Act open enrollment begins on November 1, people seeking coverage will face much higher costs due to increased monthly premiums and the expiration of tax credits that provided critical financial assistance. Access to affordable coverage is key to helping people get reproductive health care, including contraception. Unless lawmakers take action to extend ACA tax credits, many enrollees could be forced drop their coverage entirely and lose access to vital care. https://gu.tt/47lC0Aw #AffordableCareAct #ReproductiveHealth

Millions of people in the US rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to feed their families, including those living with low incomes. This critical funding will be suspended by the federal government as of November 1—yet another attack on the health and well-being of marginalized communities. https://gu.tt/3X5wsUw
SNAP funding is set to lapse Nov. 1, leaving recipients empty-handed. Here's what experts say.

Mifepristone is safe, effective and widely accepted by providers and patients in the US. Yet it remains a prime target of the anti-abortion movement, including in the current politically motivated review at the FDA. A new analysis by Guttmacher experts Kelly Baden, Joerg Dreweke and Rachel Jones examines mifepristone’s exemplary safety record and escalating attacks rooted in junk science. The evidence is clear: investing in sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services saves lives. Fully meeting core SRH needs could: - Reduce maternal mortality by 71% - Lower neonatal mortality by 62% - Decrease unsafe abortions by 70% This September, we highlighted this data across convenings at #UNGA80. As we marked a year-long reflection on 30 years since the Beijing Declaration, discussions underscored the urgent need for renewed global commitment—so that in the next 30 years, equality and sexual and reproductive rights are realized for all. #ReproRights #FeministFuture #SRHR

The US Department of Health and Human Services has reportedly laid off the staff at the Office of Population Affairs (OPA). This is a shocking move that has massive consequences for reproductive health care nationwide. These layoffs threaten Title X—the nation’s only federal family planning program—and the Teen Pregnancy Prevention (TPP) Program, which funds evidence-based sex education. Title X serves people with low incomes, those with no insurance or who are underinsured, young people, and immigrants. Title X helped 2.8 million people get birth control, STI testing, and pregnancy counseling in 2023. The TPP Program aims to build an evidence base for effective sex education programs. Ending this program would severely damage efforts focused on young people's sexual and reproductive health. Threats to these programs are not happening in isolation. Combined with cuts to Medicaid, the defunding of Planned Parenthood and continued attacks on abortion access, this administration is systematically dismantling SRH care in the US. The harm—particularly for people who are already marginalized by the health care system—is devastating.
