Don Norman Design Award (DNDA) is a global platform to showcase design projects that profoundly impact society.
About us
Don Norman Design Award (DNDA) is a global platform for early-career practitioners and educational organizations to showcase design projects that profoundly impact society and then, to host an international summit for all groups that are working to benefit society through Humanity-Centered Design. What kinds of projects? See the United Nations’ list of 17 Sustainable Development Goals at https://sdgs.un.org/ (and read deeply into the numerous specialized websites branching off from that site). The awards celebrate young professionals and educational institutions, helping them to get started on a lifetime of contributions. The summit allows everyone to share their knowledge, their lessons learned from both failures and successes, and to provide guidance and a platform for sharing. Our mission is to champion humanity-centered design, emphasizing the rights and well-being of all people and the shared ecosystem we call “the earth.”

Design has the power to change not only how products work, but how people feel about using them. ✨ In a new DNDA blog, “Ageing Is Not the Problem, Feeling Old Is: A Design Argument,” Aishwarya Edakhe and Shagun Malavia, co-founders of House Of Tomorrow in Pune, India, share the story behind Inloo — their patented, non-electric, self-lifting toilet attachment and a #DNDA25 Laureate project recognized as a Finalist. From the beginning, they made a deliberate choice not to call Inloo a medical device, but to frame it as a dignity-first, everyday design intervention that belongs comfortably in the home. 🏡 Their journey shows why assistive products should not have to look clinical to be effective, and how empathy-led design can preserve independence, confidence, and a sense of self as we age. 💡 Read the full blog to explore how House of Tomorrow is reimagining care as something embedded, respectful, and beautifully ordinary. 📖 https://lnkd.in/gJM9arQx Don't miss the opportunity to apply for a DNDA award! 📣 The DNDA26 Applications period has been extended. New deadline: September 30, 2026! 🌱 Apply for a Don Norman Design Award and share how your work is meeting community needs and creating lasting social impact. SEED (Sparking Education and Empowerment for Development), a DNDA25 Shortlist Awardee, offers a powerful example. This student-led initiative, created through collaboration between Industrial University of Santander and Dautom, empowers low-income students in Colombia through hands-on IIoT learning modules and real-world industrial case studies. By connecting academia and industry, SEED is helping prepare a new generation of professionals to drive social and technological transformation. Rooted in inclusivity, equity, and open design, SEED shows how education can become a catalyst for community collaboration and long-term empowerment. As Mentor Natalia Duarte shared: “Being selected as a DNDA25 finalist reinforces our belief that education can be transformative and is the key to transformation and sustainability. SEED shows that from our actions and projects, we can significantly impact the world.” 🌎 ✨ Around the world, people are working alongside communities to identify real needs, create meaningful solutions, and generate positive societal impact. If that sounds like your project — or the work of someone you know — now is the time to apply for a DNDA26 Award. 🏆 Top award recipients receive a monetary award, the opportunity to participate in DNDA’s annual Summit and an iconic trophy. 🔗 https://dnda.design/award/ 📅 Qualifying project applications are due September 15, 2026. 📅 Full project, education and organization applications are due September 30, 2026. 🌍 How can an organization take Humanity-Centered action and make it part of the way it operates every day? The Don Norman Design Award recognizes institutions around the world that use it as a force for public good — shaping services, systems, and communities in ways that improve people’s lives over time. The Organization Award honors nonprofits, NGOs, foundations, companies, and other recognized orgs whose work reflects a sustained commitment to societal benefit. These Laureates show that impact is not limited to one project; it can become part of an organization’s culture, partnerships, and long-term approach to solving complex challenges. 🏆 Involve Learning Solutions Foundation in India is a #DNDA25 Organization Laureate recognized for reimagining public education through student agency, peer learning, and systems-level collaboration. Based in Bengaluru, Involve works with government school systems to create opportunities for Peer Teaching, Student Leadership, and student participation in local governance — helping young people learn, lead, and see their voices as meaningful forces for change. Involve's approach is designed for some of the toughest education contexts, including multi-grade classrooms, single-teacher schools, and low-resource blocks, because it builds on the one asset every school already has: its students. What makes Involve’s work so powerful is its commitment to taking action with students, teachers, and government systems, not simply for them. The team partners with district education departments in Karnataka, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh to integrate peer teaching into teacher training, timetables, and monitoring so the model can last beyond individual projects. Student parliaments, reflection circles, and a WhatsApp-based teacher coach further support classrooms where students are active participants in their own learning and leadership. ✨ Involve reflects the kind of leadership DNDA seeks to elevate: organizations that turn Humanity-Centered Design into practical, scalable action that expands opportunity, strengthens public systems, and helps communities build more equitable futures. 🔗 Is your organization taking action to respond to urgent social needs and create lasting positive change? 🌎 Calling all changemakers showing what Humanity-Centered Action can do! A DNDA25 Laureate in Canada, Exploring wâhkôhtowin, demonstrated how it is fostering understanding and connection through a board game created to share Indigenous knowledge. Developed by Edmonton Shift Lab and now stewarded by the Indigenous Knowledge & Wisdom Centre, this cooperative board game brings to life the Cree concept of wâhkôhtowin — meaning kinship and the interwoven relationships that sustain communities and natural systems. Participants experience the impact of Treaty, deepen their understanding of shared history, and connect with the realities faced by Indigenous peoples. ✨Our judges saw this project’s power to ignite meaningful conversations and reflection, and benefit communities! We know there are countless projects around the globe where people are identifying needs within and in conjunction with their communities, addressing them and having a societal impact. If this is the kind of work you’re doing, apply for a DNDA26 Award now! 🔗 https://dnda.design/award/ 📅 Qualifying project applications are due July 15, 2026. 📅 Full project, education and organization applications are due August 17, 2026.
