Our CTO, Scott Francis, shares how DigitalMaas reduced infrastructure costs with RDS & EKS Reserved Instances, query optimisation, caching, and AWS Aurora I/O-Optimized. Check it out below! 👇 #AWS #CloudCostOptimisation #SaaS #DigitalMaas #TechLeadership
🚀 How We Cut AWS Costs at DigitalMaas Without Sacrificing Performance Infrastructure costs can make or break a SaaS business. At DigitalMaas, we’ve been focused on reducing AWS costs while keeping our platform scalable and efficient. Here’s what worked for us: ✅ Reserved Instances for predictable workloads – We locked in EKS nodes and RDS instances to avoid on-demand pricing. But with RDS, scaling up would have required selling existing reservations, which is something I really didn’t want to deal with. So managing them properly was a must. ✅ Offloading compute from the database to EKS – Since our EKS nodes are fixed-cost resources, we made sure to use them efficiently instead of overloading the database with heavy queries. ✅ Reducing I/O costs through query optimisation & caching – We optimised queries, moved ETL processing to our data pipeline before writing to the DB, and introduced a memory cache layer for frequently accessed but rarely changed data. This significantly reduced database load and improved efficiency. ✅ Switching to AWS Aurora I/O-Optimized – Storage volume wasn’t our concern, so paying extra for used storage resulted in massive I/O cost savings—a trade-off that worked in our favour. 💡 Key Takeaways for Optimising Cloud Costs • Plan RDS reservations carefully—scaling up means selling them, which I wanted to avoid. • Use your fixed-cost resources wisely—leverage EKS nodes for compute instead of overloading the DB. • Caching matters—reducing query load can have a big impact on performance and costs. • I/O costs can be a hidden killer—understanding AWS Aurora’s pricing model helped us unlock major savings. 🔍 What cost-saving strategies have worked for your SaaS platform? Would love to hear what’s working for others! #AWS #CloudCostOptimisation #Kubernetes #SaaS #EKS #Aurora #TechLeadership
