We accelerate marine research and innovation in Europe
About us
EMBRC is a research infrastructure that accelerates marine biology and ecology research in Europe. Through a network of 80+ marine sites in Europe, we provide access to biodiversity and ecosystems, services and expertise in marine science to help researchers from academia and industry study the ocean and speed up discoveries. Our work helps develop innovative solutions for the environment and the sustainable blue economy. EMBRC fills gaps in ocean observation data through the EMO BON’s observatory. Part of the UN Ocean Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, this EMBRC’s initiative is the first coordinated long-term genomic biodiversity observatory in Europe that studies marine life using DNA techniques. In the face of global environmental challenges, EMBRC supports science-based decision-making and biodiversity management policies for a more sustainable future. The organisation operates under the legal status of a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), granted by the European Commission. Join our community to get the latest updates on our research & innovation projects and partnerships in Europe and beyond.

Open data are essential if we want marine science to be usable for real-world decision-making. EMO BON is EMBRC’s centrally coordinated network of marine observatories. Focusing on DNA, the network helps researchers close key data gaps in marine biodiversity, monitor marine ecosystems, and address pressing issues such as climate change. When marine biodiversity data are standardised and openly available, they can be reused across regions and combined with other datasets. That’s why EMO BON observatory datasets are open-access, available via the European Nucleotide Archive (ENA), and integrated into the EU Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO). These data support researchers worldwide to: ● Advance ocean modelling ● Identify biodiversity patterns ● Detect novel microorganisms ● Monitor non-indigenous species (NIS) 🔗 Discover more and access the data: https://swll.to/d2RZK9 DTO BioFlow EMODnet EuroGOOS, European Global Ocean Observing System MARCO-BOLO Christina Pavloudi Ioulia Santi Tosca Sala EMBRC Belgium EMBRC Spain Marine Biodiversity Observation Network MBON EMODnet #MarineObservation #OpenData

When marine data are well managed, usable, and accessible, they can improve digital processes that help researchers make faster, more robust discoveries. Through its Data and e-Infrastructures Working Group, EMBRC brings together experts from across its network to strengthen how marine research data are generated, processed, and shared. The group works to: ● Develop standards and best practices for marine data ● Improve tools and services for analysing and managing large datasets ● Enhance interoperability between digital research infrastructures ● Support collaboration between scientists, bioinformaticians, and IT specialists By improving the technologies and frameworks behind marine data, our Working Group helps ensure EMBRC’s research is accessible and usable for researchers, policymakers, and industry. Access to the facilities provided valuable opportunities…“to engage with other researchers or experts in the field…and trying to find solutions to real-world problems” ~ María Vila Duplá, Research Associate at the Institute of Water Research, University of Granada Through the AQUASERV-RI Transnational Access (TA) programme, the EMBRC Portuguese marine site Centre of Marine Sciences (CCMAR) recently welcomed María so she could access specialised technologies and advance her research. María studies how climate change may transform phytoplankton communities and the cascading effects this can have on marine food webs. As part of her project, she used imaging equipment to analyse samples and gain new insights into aquatic ecosystems. Through AQUASERV, we support transnational access to our marine research services across Europe at no cost. This is key to our mission of accelerating marine biology and ecology research so we can understand the pressures on life in the ocean, and foster technological innovation, and promote the sustainable use of marine resources. 🎥 Watch the video to learn more about María’s work and experience. #MarineTech #MarineResearch Universidad de Granada
