We support journalists through grants and training to cover the environment more effectively.
About us
Internews initially developed the Earth Journalism Network (EJN) in 2004 to enable journalists from developing countries to cover the environment more effectively. We are now a truly global network working with reporters and media outlets in virtually every region of the world. In our mission to improve the quantity and quality of environmental reporting, EJN trains journalists to cover a wide variety of issues, develops innovative online environmental news sites and produces content for local media – including ground-breaking investigative reports. We also establish networks of environmental journalists in countries where they don't exist and build their capacity where they do. We do so through workshops and the development of training materials and by offering Fellowship programs, grants to media organizations, story stipends, and support for story production and distribution.

Lost Echoes: How a Falling Bridge in Bihar is Threatening #GangeticDolphins Syed Abubakr Fatmi and I report from Bihar’s #Bhagalpur & Patna This is our 1st story of a 3-part series on Gangetic Dolphins. The project is funded by Earth Journalism Network & Internews. Joydeep Gupta Thanks to my editor Mike Shanahan for his guidance and mentorship all this while, and to the publishing editors at Ground Report, Rajeev Tyagi and Wahid Bhat for their support. In Bihar’s Bhagalpur, the endangered Ganges river dolphins are fighting against the growing threats. Climate change, collapsing infrastructure, and even some of the very volunteers meant to protect them—the Dolphin Mitras. With the support of the Earth Journalism Network, Sumit Singh and @Syed Abubakr traveled to the Vikramshila Gangetic Dolphin Sanctuary in Bhagalpur to report on the challenges it faces. #ClimateChange #WildlifeConservation #EnvironmentalJournalism #Bihar #GangesRiver #RiverDolphins #EJN https://lnkd.in/gJHD_swh

It's a carbon sink, a coastal protector, and a nursery for marine life. And it's disappearing. I'm talking about Posidonia oceanica, the "lungs of the Mediterranean Sea." Last May, I received a grant from the Earth Journalism Network to report on the fight to save this seagrass. Today, that story is out on Mongabay News. Human activities, such as illegal trawling, pollution, and boat anchoring, are devastating these meadows. But Italy is deploying multiple sophisticated sensors to map its entire coastline in exceptional detail, creating a powerful new tool to inform protection and conservation. While this large-scale mapping provides a new baseline, targeted restoration efforts show that we can bring life back to the sea. Read the full story here:

"The exploitation of beaches by resorts makes the balance between tourism and habitat conservation difficult to achieve, if not utopian," explains Marianna Marangi, microbiologist and researcher at the University of Foggia. Caretta caretta, the loggerhead sea turtle, is classified as a low-risk species, but its survival depends entirely on conservation efforts. In Salento, on the same beaches that host some of Italy’s most luxurious resorts, turtles are nesting in increasing numbers, yet protection measures remain far from a priority, and conservation work relies solely on volunteers. I am deeply grateful to Ugo Mellone for his stunning photography, which captured this fragile balance so powerfully, and to the Earth Journalism Network and Magma Magazine for giving me the chance to tell this story about the beaches where I grew up and watched them change. And a huge thank you to Guia Baggi for her support, mentorship, and incredible editorial work. #Journalism #Environment #ClimateCrisis #Conservation #MarineLife #Puglia #EJN #Storytelling #Giornalismo #Ambiente #CrisiClimatica #Conservazione #TartarugheMarine #Puglia

✨ Honored and grateful! Now holding the concrete trophy from the 2025 Covering Climate Now Awards. My story, published with Instituto AzMina and supported by the Earth Journalism Network, won in the category of Displacement and Migration. This recognition means so much because it honors the strength, resilience, and voices of Indigenous women, whose stories and leadership are vital in the face of the climate crisis. I’m proud to help amplify their voices through journalism and storytelling that connects people and places. 🎣 Along Libya’s coast, some fishers say their nets now catch more plastic than fish—as industrial trawlers, pollution and weak enforcement deplete the Mediterranean Sea. This month, we spotlight EJN fellow Islam Alatrash, who reported from the United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice, France, earlier this year. In his piece for Deutsche Welle, he details how collapsing fish stocks are devastating marine ecosystems and livelihoods across North Africa—and why stronger North–South cooperation is vital to safeguard the region’s waters: https://loom.ly/QkCEzBM 📹Here, Alatrash offers us a behind-the-scenes look at how he brought fishers’ voices to global decision-makers at UNOC. #MarineConservation #Mediterranean #Fisheries #Sustainability #ClimateJournalism #BlueEconomy #OceanGovernance #EnvironmentalJournalism #UNOC2025

Latest for Asian Dispatch, with support from Earth Journalism Network. This wouldn’t have been possible without the help of so many people along the way. I’m deeply grateful to my forever mentor, Mohd Badruddoza , who listened to this idea when I was just getting ready to apply for the grant and pushed me to pursue it. I’m equally thankful to Shameem Ara Sheuli, who has been a patient, steady mentor throughout the entire process. In Malaysia, I had the privilege of connecting with Jaya Shreedhar, who stepped in at a critical moment and connected me to the right experts when my outreach had hit a wall. That’s also where I spoke with Harjeet Singh, who generously gave his time and helped us frame the issue and see the bigger picture. I’m indebted to Pallavi Pundir for being the first to believe in this story, and to a powerhouse team—Kritika . Anoushka Dalmia, Preeksha Malhotra—who brought it to life. It’s been such a joy working with this team! And a special thanks to Rifat Anik, my work partner across many projects, who once again braved the challenge of working with me and delivered the most essential piece of this project: the visuals that hold everything together. This story took me to new places and into difficult, necessary conversations. I was nervous about whether I could do justice to the people who trusted us with their experiences. Connecting the dots across such a niche intersection was not straightforward; it took time, and patience. What I really hope is that when people talk about climate anxiety, climate stress or mental health, it isn’t only Global North experiences that define the issue. The Global Majority has shouldered these crises for so long that they are too often normalized. I hope this story sparks conversations about the comprehensive support frontline communities still lack—and are entitled to—especially as COP30 approaches next month. And the apas who shared their time, opened their homes, let us into their world, thank you for trusting us with your story. https://lnkd.in/dqvyB5hY
