Another breakthrough story from our audio series! 🌊 A ton of pressure on every drive, and it kept working All Oceans Engineering built the MAC-ROV, a fly-out robot that scouts ahead of larger ROVs in some of the deepest parts of the ocean, deep sea mining, drilling, salvage, and science. The catch? At those depths, reliability must be absolute, the fly-out is often the only hope of recovering a host ROV that fails. And AOE needed the drives out of the pressure vessel entirely, to make room for cameras, sonar, and controls. Elmo's answer: eight miniature servo drives mounted inside the thrusters themselves. A special version was developed and pressure-tested over two days in Aberdeen, where it kept responding and operating at 700 bar, then passed full production testing back in Israel. Tiny drive.
