  • HVAC producers: Your essential guide to EPR compliance   If you manufacture, import or brand heating and cooling equipment in the UK, WEEE regulations apply to you. Are you switched on to this?   In our latest blog, David Harding, Head of Business Development at ERP UK, breaks down everything HVAC professionals need to know about Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and WEEE compliance.   He covers these issues: You're likely a 'producer' if you manufacture, import, rebrand, or relabel electrical equipment for the UK market - even installers can fall into this category. The benefits extend beyond compliance - demonstrating sustainability credentials opens doors to larger contracts and serves as a powerful market differentiator. Non-compliance carries serious consequences, including hefty fines, sales restrictions and reputational damage.   Getting set up for reporting and becoming compliant doesn't have to be complicated. Start with a product portfolio audit, calculate your annual tonnage and plan accordingly.   We have posted a blog titled: The essential guide to navigate WEEE regulations - please find a link to our website in our bio.   Does your business need support? • E-Waste Day Cable Collection Challenge 🎉 Cable Collection Challenge – We have our winners! ERP UK and its European partners are celebrating a major achievement: together, we have overseen the responsible collection, management, and recycling of over 5 million tonnes of e-waste in the past 20 years. To mark this milestone, we challenged our team to bring in their old, unwanted cables for recycling as part of The Great Cable Challenge. Did you know? The Great Cable Challenge, launched alongside International E-Waste Day, revealed that the average UK household hoards 15 unused cables in their 'drawer of doom'. These cables contain copper that's recyclable and requires 85% less energy to recycle than mining virgin copper. For the heating and cooling industry, this statistic translates directly to your products. Heat pumps, air conditioning units, refrigeration systems – they all contain substantial amounts of copper wiring and components. A huge thank-you to everyone who took the time to participate! We're pleased to announce our winners: 🥇 1st place: Dan – with a whopping cable haul weighing around 25.0kg! 🥈 2nd place: Sion – with a great bunch of cables, weighing 0.80kg. 🥉 3rd place: Ben – weighing in at 0.66kg. 🏅 4th place: Stuart – weighing at 0.26kg. 🏅 5th place: David – whose haul from last year has been added to this overall collection 👉 Every cable recycled is a step towards conserving resources, reducing carbon emissions, and protecting our environment for future generations. Together, it is possible to achieve a real impact for a more sustainable future! #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #Ewaste #EPR #IEWD

  • Vape disposal: The hidden fire hazard Our latest blog explores a growing national concern: the incorrect disposal of vapes. When vapes are thrown into general waste, their lithium-ion batteries can cause fires in refuse lorries and recycling centres. This makes them hazardous waste, requiring specialist handling. Under WEEE Regulations, retailers have a legal duty to provide accessible collection facilities for used vapes. As our blog makes clear, proactive retailers see this as an opportunity to build customer trust and demonstrate their commitment to environmental safety. Closing this gap is essential. Every retailer selling vapes, regardless of size, needs to provide accessible, clearly signposted collection facilities. It's about taking responsibility for the entire product lifecycle and protecting the communities they serve. Once collected, vapes are processed at specialist facilities where valuable materials, including lithium, cobalt and copper, are recovered and returned to the supply chain. This supports the circular economy while ensuring hazardous components are handled safely. When vape takeback is integrated smoothly into your existing customer journey, it becomes a natural part of doing business. Customers appreciate the convenience, and staff become confident advocates for responsible disposal. ERP UK offers specialist support to help retailers navigate these complex obligations and implement effective vape recycling programmes. Discover how to turn compliance into a competitive advantage. • PackUK RAM Roadmap 2025-2030   PackUK has just released its RAM roadmap for 2025-2030, and it's a game-changer for packaging compliance planning.   For the first time, producers have a clear five-year view of how recyclability standards will evolve. This means you can move from reactive compliance to strategic planning, building future regulatory changes into your design cycles and supplier relationships today.   Key milestones to watch:   2025 (Q4): Take-back scheme guidance and evidence provision reviews 2026: Fibre-based composites guidance - critical for businesses using composite materials 2027: Rigid plastics guidance and contamination standards 2028: DRS trigger point - if no Deposit Return Scheme is operational, drinks container producers face expanded pEPR obligations 2029: Bioplastics and compostables review - clarity on materials currently in regulatory grey areas   What this means for your business:   Map your packaging portfolio against this timeline. If you're planning design changes in 2026, you need to account for the 2027 rigid plastics review. If you produce drink containers, 2028 requires preparation now.   The roadmap also signals ongoing refinement beyond 2030, with quarterly reviews ensuring RAM stays aligned with UK policy and international protocols.   Important caveat: PackUK states "all timings in the roadmap are subject to change" - so build flexibility into your planning.   At ERP UK, we've supported over 700 businesses in navigating packaging compliance. Our expert team tracks these regulatory developments and translates technical guidance into actionable strategies.   Want to understand how the RAM roadmap affects your packaging portfolio? • October 1st EPR Reporting Deadline 🎯 It's a watershed moment for UK packaging compliance In case you missed it, ERP UK's John Redmayne appeared on BBC Breakfast and Radio 5 Live this week to discuss the start of the new era in Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), which will fundamentally change how the UK funds packaging waste management.   John told the BBC: “Businesses know the change has gradually been coming towards us since 2018. At ERP UK, we have been advising and guiding companies in understanding the changes and making sure they are prepared.”   What's changing: From this October, companies will receive their first EPR invoices, taking on costs previously covered by local authorities Approximately £1.5 billion in annual expenses are transferred from taxpayers to packaging producers Thousands of UK businesses (including manufacturers, retailers and importers) are now responsible for end-of-life packaging costs   Why this matters: For the first time, we have genuine alignment between financial incentives and environmental good practice. Companies using recyclable packaging that meets new definitions will see lower costs, driving real market demand for sustainable packaging choices.   The opportunity ahead: This system creates the market drivers for packaging innovations that campaigners, government and progressive producers have been calling for - lighter materials, better recyclability and reduced environmental impact.   Key focus areas: ✅ Robust data collection and reporting for accurate cost allocation ✅ Compliance and data accuracy ✅ Using insights to optimise packaging choices   A public register also ensures transparency, where companies can verify that suppliers and competitors are registered and contributing fairly. No hiding, no free-riding.   The change is here, and companies that embrace these changes will be the winners in this new landscape.   Need support navigating the new EPR requirements? Our team of compliance experts is here to help simplify your obligations and turn regulatory challenges into competitive advantages. • Vape Recycling - A Retail Opportunity Why vape recycling is a retail opportunity, not a chore With UK consumers purchasing 13.5 million vapes weekly in 2024 (up 37% year-on-year), retailers are facing a significant opportunity disguised as a compliance challenge. The reality check: 8.2 million vapes are improperly disposed of weekly Fire hazards and environmental damage are increasing New WEEE regulations require retailers to implement take-back schemes The opportunity ✅Position your business as a responsible community partner ✅ Demonstrate sustainability leadership to eco-conscious customers ✅ Build customer trust through visible environmental action ✅ Strengthen community relationships As enforcement increases and customer awareness rises, John Redmayne, Managing Director at ERP UK, told Grocery Trader that retailers who treat vape recycling as a competitive advantage, rather than just a compliance obligation, will be the ones to stay ahead. Ready to turn vape recycling into a retail win? ERP UK are here to make compliance simple with compliant containers, online collection management and expert guidance: https://lnkd.in/e7XRf3zA   #VapeRecycling #RetailCompliance #WEEE #Sustainability #CircularEconomy #EPR #EnvironmentalCompliance #RetailOpportunity

  • Did you know that the UK discards enough lithium through improper vape disposal each year to power 5,000 electric vehicle batteries? 🔋 With vape waste continuing to make headlines, it's crucial to remember that the tools for proper recycling already exist, but awareness remains low. Under the WEEE Regulations, all UK retailers selling vapes must provide collection facilities for consumers to return used devices when purchasing new ones. For larger retailers with sales areas exceeding 400 square metres, the requirements extend further; they must accept all small electronic waste items free of charge, regardless of whether the item was purchased. At ERP UK, we're making compliance simple by providing: • Ready-to-use collection containers designed specifically for point-of-sale vape collection • Straightforward online booking for collections • Support for promoting take-back schemes to customers The challenge isn't a lack of recycling facilities but a lack of knowledge. Most consumers don't know these take-back services exist in shops! By actively promoting these schemes through clear signage and staff engagement, retailers can play a vital role in creating a more circular system where 80% of vape materials can be recycled rather than ending up in landfill. Are you meeting your WEEE obligations? Get in touch to find out how we can help simplify your compliance journey.
