Today we are proposing the EU KIDS Act. We’re giving parents the power to set boundaries in the digital world, and put the responsibility back on platforms to protect children. We are recommending that children under 13 stay off social media. For children aged between 13 and under 15, we recommend access through ‘mini accounts’ linked to a parent or guardian’s account. From age 15 young people should be able to open their own accounts, with strong safeguards to keep them safe online. As European Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen said: “We do not have to accept addictive features. We do not have to accept children being drawn into ever more extreme content. We do not have to accept that girls have their photos used for AI-generated sexualised images. We decide our rules, not Big Tech.“
