building embeddings-based search infrastructure

About us

Exa was built with a simple goal — to organize all knowledge. After several years of heads-down research, we developed novel representation learning techniques and crawling infrastructure so that LLMs can intelligently find relevant information. Check out our web search API at https://exa.ai Want to join the team transforming the data layer of the Ai ecosystem? We're hiring! Very excited to share this work on how search quality shape RL outcomes! Search agents often use Google as the backend during RL - how does Exa compare to Google on training LLMs to search? In this blog post, we find that LLMs using Exa during reinforcement learning reach higher performance with 70% less training compute. Great working with Sol Kim, Michael Fine and others on this. Most benefits from coding agents center engineering teams, but among the teams to most benefit is GTM. One reason for this is the ceiling in most people's workflows is people search, email enrichments, automated sequences based on usage....etc. In reality, internal usage + across our GTM enterprise customers prove the ceiling is far higher. We'll share some of our workflows at Exa and learn from others pushing best in class approaches here: • Scott Langille (Exa) → product/ segmentation mapping at scale and enhanced enrichment built into GTM workflows • Angela Ferrante (Zapier) → agents that identify lead leakage and prioritize pipeline tests • George Hou (Cursor) → an internal AE companion agent • Shashank Khanna (Vanta) → a GTM state machine feeding multiple workflows • Dan Ahmadi (Upside) → paid ad optimization running on autopilot • Chris Bennett (Wonderschool) → 40+ agents automating outreach and internal ops sign up here: luma.com/04bg11l5

Thrilled to be co-hosting an event with my good friend Yi Li during TECH WEEK by a16z this June 4th in NYC (Lightfield x Exa). We're bringing together some of the top founding GTM hires at AI-native companies for a panel on one of the questions I find myself thinking about most right now: what actually moves the dial when you're selling to technical buyers? These are people who've been in the trenches - figuring out the right motions, the right messaging, and the right moments to push. Should be a genuinely great conversation. If you're in NYC that week, come hang. Network, reconnect with old friends, and walk away with something useful. 📅 June 4 | NYC | NY Tech Week https://lnkd.in/ddBzcyRD

Excited to partner with Google to offer Exa inside Gemini models! Gemini models can now access a new type of search engine designed for agents. Exa's search is designed for agentic products that require the highest quality over code, companies, people, papers, etc. and now the reasoning layer can come from Gemini. In other words, 10^18 🤝 10^100

💡GTM Spotlight: 6 weeks into joining Exa as a Strategic Account Executive, Cat Yu has already closed 8 deals and actively manages $2M in pipeline. With experience scaling companies like Stripe, Uber, and Visa, Cat operates at lightning speed with a killer instinct. She’s both technical and creative– with an interdisciplinary background (three master's degrees in three years!) at MIT School of Engineering and Tsinghua and work experience across three continents. Most importantly, she’s an absolute joy to work with :) We’re excited to see her scale up our GTM machine in the coming years.

Exa now reduces input tokens for web agents by 96%. We trained a text extraction "Highlights" model to dynamically select only the most relevant tokens from a webpage, for a given query. Only 500 tokens of highlights are needed to match the RAG performance of a full 10K token webpage. We find Highlights to be particularly useful for frontier models like GPT 5.5, where content density enables longer horizon tasks by preventing context bloat. You can use it today by using the "highlights" content type in our API! Learn more about how Exa's highlights work: https://lnkd.in/g869NNrM

I recently concluded a rewarding 6-year journey at Meta. Looking back, I feel incredibly lucky to have led the teams building the recommendation algorithms atop the world’s largest social graph, as well as the search engine and vector database powering Facebook, Instagram, and the public web. Meta was the place I stayed longest in my career, and I will always be proud of the impact we made together. In the past year, while deeply immersed in search at Meta, I developed a strong conviction: every AI needs a dedicated knowledge layer to serve relevant, fresh context. Search is one of the most scalable ways to complement AI. Today, most searches are performed by humans, but we are rapidly approaching a shift where AI will consume far more search results than people. The infrastructure required for "Search for AI" is fundamentally different from the classic architectures designed for human consumption. This aligns perfectly with Exa's vision of building the best search API for AI. I first discovered Exa last year while building an AI people-search product, and I’ve been consistently impressed by the team’s technical depth, transparency, and relentless focus. I’m thrilled to share that I’ve joined as Head of Search Infra, partnering closely with Will BrykJeffrey Wang, and a world-class team to build the search engine for the AI era. We are growing at a pace I have never seen before. We are actively hiring across the board: https://exa.ai/careers. If you're interested in building the future of AI infrastructure, Agent, Content Understanding and Ranking, please apply directly or reach out!
