The biggest scam risk today isn’t ignorance—it’s overconfidence. 69% of people believe they can spot a scam. Yet 43% of those confident individuals still fell victim in the past year. That’s the overconfidence effect in action: a cognitive bias when people trust their instincts instead of being hesitant and verifying. Scammers know it—and they exploit it. Scam rates doubled in the US and almost doubled in the UK between 2024 and 2025. In Vietnam, 90% of people reported being scammed. To protect consumers, we need to: • Shift from awareness to resilience. Knowing the red flags isn’t enough—even informed people can be emotionally manipulated. Let’s normalize hesitation as a safety tool. • Focus on emotions, not just tactics. Instead of asking “What do scams look like?”, ask “When am I most emotionally exposed?” Recognizing how you feel can be as powerful as recognizing what you see. • Turn awareness into advocacy. Don’t stop at “I know the signs.” Ask: “Do my friends and family?” Making scam literacy social makes it stick—especially during stressful life moments when people are most vulnerable. Wednesday, October 29 marked F-Secure's first global Sustainability Day, and our teams across all 16 countries came together (some in person, some online) to dig into what sustainability actually means for us as a company. Combining on-site and online events, we covered the three pillars of sustainability, discussing environmental, social, and economic factors from our point of view. In a panel discussion moderated by Marie-Sofie Seger, (F-Secure's Sustainability Lead), our CTO Santeri Kangas joined green coding expert Janne Kalliola and researcher Gopika Premsankar to talk about the environmental impact of the code we write every day, and how we can balance cutting-edge AI with keeping carbon emissions in check. These aren't easy questions, but they're the right ones to be asking. We also focused on physical and mental wellbeing by hosting yoga sessions and taking walks outside in fresh air, as well as talked about diversity, equity, and inclusion, because building a sustainable future means building an inclusive and healthy one too. Obviously, there was some cake as well. Big thanks to the Sustainability Day team and everyone who joined the conversations, took part in the wellbeing sessions, asked tough questions, and shared ideas!

Some snapshots from the last two weeks, as we've celebrated Diwali at our Bengaluru, Kuala Lumpur, and Helsinki offices ✨🪔 Our CEO Timo Laaksonen happened to visit our KL office at the same time, and had a chance to party with the local team there! The celebrations included delicious food, games, and an Indian block art workshop bringing light to the darkest time of year. (Especially here in the northern hemisphere this is much needed, as the sun is now visible for approximately 3.4 nanoseconds daily 🥱)

Scam centers thrive when people dismiss their sophistication, scale, or human cost—leaving more victims vulnerable. To disrupt them, we first need to understand them. Scam operations aren’t just shadowy rooms of cold callers. They take two very different, but equally dangerous forms: • Profit-driven scam centers – where young, university-educated scammers flaunt luxury lifestyles while stealing millions from victims worldwide. • Forced-labor scam farms – where trafficked workers are imprisoned and coerced into scamming under brutal conditions—a human rights crisis hiding behind cyber crime. These realities reveal a truth we can’t ignore: scams are not just financial threats. They’re a complex ecosystem fueled by ambition, exploitation, and desperation. 🔗 Learn more in our new Scam Intelligence & Impacts Report 2025: https://lnkd.in/dEvekcYt #CyberSecurity #Scams #ScamProtection #FSecure #ScamCenter

F-Secure Threat Intelligence Researcher Megan Squire explains in The AI Journal why younger generations are now prime targets for online scammers. F-Secure’s data paints a clear picture of misplaced confidence. Nearly 70% of respondents worldwide believe they can spot a scam, yet 43% fell victim in the past year. That gap between perception and reality is especially wide among younger adults, who grew up online and assume digital fluency equates to digital safety. https://lnkd.in/dPW6_73K

“89% of the time, scammers are using AI to overcome weaknesses in their own ‘bait.’ Telling people to look for spelling errors isn’t going to cut it anymore.” In her Pulse 2.0 interview, F-Secure Threat Intelligence Researcher Megan Squire discusses how AI is reshaping scam tactics and what that means for consumer protection. 👇 Read the full interview in the comments.
