Have you heard the term payola? It's when radio stations are secretly paid to feature artists, manipulating the airwaves in favor of the music industry - and it's illegal. Today's Enforcement Advisory explains what payola is, why it violates our rules, and how to avoid it. A short history lesson on the word payola📚 The term was coined in 1938 by Variety magazine, but the practice dates back to the 1890s. Ola was a common suffix at the time, with products like Pianola, Victrola, Amberola, and even some current popular brands still include ola. Learn more about our place in the ola lore with our enforcement advisory about the use of payola in the airwaves: https://lnkd.in/ddSV7JeJ

NEW: We've proposed a nearly $4.5M fine against Tenlyx in response to government imposter calls from a fake FCC 'Fraud Prevention Team.' “Cracking down on illegal robocalls will be a top priority at the FCC,” - Chairman Brendan Carr. This apparent failure to take proper measures preventing malicious actors from using its network for illegal calls violates FCC rules. We are taking steps to modernize rules to advance air mobility systems, part of the aviation industry that uses crewed and uncrewed aircraft - including drones - for easier transportation of people and cargo. We are seeking comment on changes to spectrum rules to support innovation, growth, and safety needs of this burgeoning sector as well as other uncrewed aircraft systems. Advanced air mobility systems are crewed or uncrewed, with personnel either piloting the aircraft on board or through remotely piloted or automated techniques. They support accessible and convenient transportation of people and cargo for a variety of purposes, including regional air mobility to connect remote communities to the national aviation system, shuttle services to and from airports and between urban areas, and large cargo delivery. The wireless communications technologies relied on by advanced air mobility systems include flight command and control, reliable in-aircraft broadband for passengers, and technologies designed to keep the skies above sensitive areas safe by detecting drone operations. “Going forward they will also mean more ways to help during a crisis like the fires in Los Angeles, by providing the ability to deliver personnel and supplies to hard-to-reach areas, inspect infrastructure in disaster, and assist first responders with search-and-rescue operations,” said Chairwoman Rosenworcel. https://lnkd.in/eY_XUy8m

Following recent reports involving an intrusion by foreign actors into U.S. communications networks, the FCC has taken action to safeguard the nation’s communications systems from real and present cybersecurity threats, including from state-sponsored cyber actors from the People’s Republic of China. Chairwoman Rosenworcel announced requirements for telecom carriers to secure their networks and proposes swift steps to strengthen U.S. communications from future cyberattacks. "We now have a choice to make. We can turn the other way and hope this threat goes away. But hope is not a plan..." "The time to take this action is now. We do not have the luxury of waiting," said Chairwoman Rosenworcel. https://lnkd.in/eMXu3utf

Our Schools and Libraries Cybersecurity Pilot Program today selected 707 participants including 645 schools and districts, 50 libraries, and 12 consortia. Participants in the three-year pilot program will receive support to aid with the costs of eligible cybersecurity services and equipment and provide data to better understand whether and how universal service funds could be used to improve school and library defenses against increasing cyberattacks. All 50 states, in addition to Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia, and several Tribal communities are reflected by the Pilot participants announced today. “Making sure our students have access to all the opportunities of the digital world has been a cornerstone of my time at the Commission. It is also vitally important that this access is cybersecure,” said Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel. https://lnkd.in/ejz-JRUr
