This weekend, I’ll be at FOSDEM 2026 in Brussels — and I’ll be giving a short talk in the /dev/random track. 🗓 Sunday, Feb 1 ⏰ 09:00–09:15 CET 📍 ULB, Brussels Why Open Source Looks Different in China: When vendor strategies, policy signals, and market pressure converge. In this talk, I’ll share a practitioner’s view on how open source in China actually works today — shaped less by ideals, and more by real-world constraints. If you’re attending FOSDEM this weekend, I’d love to see you there. I’ll also be around at the KAIYUANSHE 开源社 (Open Source Aliance) booth, so feel free to stop by and say hi. 🤗 And if you’re interested in Apache Gravitino — especially around data catalogs, metadata governance, or data infrastructure in the AI era — I’m always happy to chat and exchange ideas. If you won’t be at FOSDEM this time, you’re very welcome to message me directly. Looking forward to connecting and continuing the conversation.

Pleased to see China Open Source Conference (COSCon 2025) — organized by KAIYUANSHE 开源社 — featured in China Daily. As the most representative community-driven open source conference in China, COSCon brings together developers, maintainers, community leaders, students, and industry practitioners to exchange ideas beyond code — from AI to embodied intelligence, from governance to global collaboration. This year’s COSCon also welcomed a strong group of international open source leaders, joining Chinese community builders on stage for talks and roundtable discussions, including: • Nick Vidal, Head of Community and Marketing at the Open Source Initiative (OSI) • Amanda Brock, CEO of OpenUK, • Keith Bergelt, CEO of Open Invention Network • Richard Hartmann (“RichiH”), core organizer of FOSDEM • Serge Stinckwich, Head of Research at the United Nations University Institute in Macau Their participation reflects COSCon’s role as a bridge — connecting China’s open source communities with global peers through shared values, real conversations, and long-term trust. Open source grows strongest where communities meet. https://lnkd.in/gR4DQzh9

Ten years on, open source in China is no longer just an idea — it’s a force shaping the global future. #COSCon2025 #OpenSource
Exactly ten years ago today (10.24), we organized a milestone event — the first Apache community conference ever held in China, marking the first anniversary of KAIYUANSHE 开源社 (China Open Source Alliance). Back then, open source was still a niche topic in China. We were among the few who truly believed that open source could change the world. A decade later, open source has moved from the edge to the center — from a developer’s ideal to an industrial foundation, a national strategy, and a core driver of globalization. It’s a moment to celebrate, but also one that makes me reflect on the future. As AI reshapes the software paradigm, what role will open source play in the next decade? Will it remain the engine of innovation, or evolve into something entirely new? Now that China has become an undeniable force in the global open-source ecosystem, how can we help open source grow better, together with the world? These are the questions I’ve been thinking deeply about while preparing for this year’s COSCon — the China Open Source Conference. December 6–7, in Beijing — join us at COSCon 2025 to explore the future of open source.
