Optoelectronics, the study and application of electronic systems and devices that source, detect, and control light, is one of the foundational technologies of the information age: it spans displays, data transmission, sensors, and future quantum information systems. Our goals: Transform conventional and quantum optoelectronics through the development of atomically-precise semiconductor materials and scalable manufacturing processes. Educate a diverse generation of scientists and engineers to lead the U.S. to technological prominence through convergent team-based collaboration across traditional disciplinary and organizational interfaces.

We printed individual colloidal quantum dots onto nanobeam cavities using EHD inkjet and studied their single-photon emission 🚨 . SPEED printing single quantum dots: enabling next-generation electronic and optical devices with nanoscale additive manufacturing 🐾 🧪 🚦 #Quantumdots can be designed to emit individual photons, and the wavelength of that light can be tuned by changing the size and shape of the nanoparticles — not just their chemical makeup. And now, a multi-disciplinary IMOD team of University of Washington research groups involving David Ginger, Kai-Mei Fu, Arka Majumdar, Brandi Cossairt, and corresponding author Devin MacKenzie has demonstrated a novel technique that unlocks two key steps towards harnessing the powers of quantum dots for these technologies. With single particle extraction electrohydrodynamics (SPEED) printing, IMOD researchers can place individual QDs into cavities in pre-fabricated hardware, enabling the integration of complex photonic circuits and quantum light sources with nanoscale precision. SPEED printing also scales up for large arrays of QDs at room temperature without relying on vacuum processing or lithography, which could reduce energy consumption and material waste compared to conventional electronics manufacturing. The technique was developed with a special printer at the Washington Clean Energy Testbeds, acquired thanks to support from JCDREAM.
